Kyivstar upgraded IT infrastructure based on Oracle Exadata Database Machine

The operator of telecommunication services Kyivstar completed the large-scale project on upgrade of IT infrastructure based on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. Completely optimized integrated hardware and software system Oracle Exadata is used for providing the highest level of reliability and performance of the financial and analytical systems Kyivstar, says Oracle corporation.

Kyivstar has the developed information infrastructure. It provides data processing, base stations arriving about more than 13 thousand, 200 customer service centers and 4 large call centers located in the different cities of Ukraine. Computing resources of the company are concentrated in two corporate data processing centers equipped with the modern server and communication hardware. Kyivstar successfully uses more than 15 years software products of Oracle practically in all main computing systems.

In 2010 after estimated tests Kyivstar selected Oracle Exadata. Completely optimized integrated complex program and the hardware offers new approach to creation of the hardware systems optimized for work with the specific software, first of all with the latest version of Oracle Database 11g R2. Thanks to it maximum capacity both for data warehouses, and for the consolidated workloads and applications of transaction processing in real time is reached, explained in Oracle.

Already results of preservice tests in Kyivstar showed that system performance of financial and analytical calculations grew by Exadata by 3–5 times at more than quadruple reduction of requirements to volumes of disk memory. Such operational indicators allowed the operator to review plans of acquisition of new disk arrays for an old system which did not give performance gain.

For incomplete year of operation in Kyivstar on Oracle Exadata it was consolidated several different analytical and computing subsystems solving problems of maximizing income and control of marginality of the company, control of correctness of tariffing, identification of losses because of misoperation of the technical systems or fraud, preparation and providing the reporting for marketing and financial services of the company and other tasks.

In 2011 for increase in computing power and ensuring fault tolerance of systems Kyivstar expanded use of Oracle Exadata at the expense of one more complex for the second data processing center. Reliability of functioning of the computing system is provided with use of technology of hot sparing of Oracle Active Data Guard which, in addition to physical reservation of databases, allows to use the reserve machine for reports generation and an analytical research of data.

Among key project deliverables — fall forward of work of computation processes, significant savings of disk space, a possibility of quick implementation of new projects. Installation and setup of a complex, including the software, was performed by specialists of Oracle with the assistance of the staff of S&T Ukraine. Technical and operational advantages of Oracle Exadata, perspective and realistic plans of upgrade old and implementations of the new systems, the experience accumulated in the company for a year of operation of a hardware and software system allow to tell about Oracle Exadata as about the new corporate platform Kyivstar, emphasized in Oracle.
