2020: Start of Reporting Transfer Project to Microsoft Power BI

On March 5, 2020, FTO began a project to transfer management reporting from 1C and local systems to Microsoft Power BI for the Leader Team.

An important point in building an analytical solution based on Microsoft Power BI is working with data sources. If there are few sources and the data structure is static, then extracting data "directly" from sources can be a good help, an alternative to building a separate showcase. The implementation of such a solution will require less time, labor and budget, it will definitely be cheaper to maintain. However, if the number of sources increases and the structure of tables changes, a more "heavy" and sustainable solution is needed.

The Leader Team business intelligence solution has grown to the size where you need to build a separate data warehouse. Otherwise, there are risks of losing information and business-critical reports. With this task, the customer turned to the FTO company, and a project was launched to optimize the architecture of the existing solution.

As of March 2020, the Leader Team infrastructure was audited, a separate data warehouse was created, which will act as the basis for the created IT architecture. Critical reporting has been transferred. The DWH for Microsoft Power BI will contain only the data required for reporting, aggregated, filtered, and "cleaned" if necessary.

The reporting transfer process continues. In the near future, all existing Power BI reports will "move" to it. When moving, they will also undergo an audit of FTO specialists and approval of Leader Team business experts for their need.

After the completion of the first project, others are planned, where the main goal will be to transfer management reporting from 1C to Microsoft Power BI. On the one hand, the project team plans to increase the performance of 1C applications by removing non-target functions from the platform. On the other hand, it is assumed that management reporting on Microsoft Power BI will be more convenient to use, will be able to open in a browser and on mobile devices, which has long become a trend and a basic requirement for modern analytical BI solutions.

Our company has been using Power BI Microsoft for a long time, but until recently it was a tool that was used by each of our directions independently of each other. As a result, the decision grew and ceased to be centrally controlled by the IT department. In fact, it has become a self-service tool. At the same time, for some divisions, the existing reporting is business critical, which means that the service for its support and development must be carried out centrally and professionally. Our local goal is refactoring and optimizing the current solution on Power BI. The global goal for the coming years is to transfer the management reporting of the group of companies to BI. In this regard, we decided to seek help from FTO specialists with whom we have been cooperating for a long time in the field of 1C systems support,
