The Russian Defense Ministry completely will refuse Windows for benefit of Linux

[Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation] made the decision to refuse completely use of Windows OS for benefit of domestic development of Astra Linux. The RBC edition at the beginning of 2018 was reported about it by Donskoy Dmitry, the development director of the Rusbitech company which developed new OS.

According to Donskoy, most state agencies work at Windows, however given software is import, and therefore unsafe. At the same time application of the special purpose operating system of Astra Linux Special Edition was recognized effective for solving of tasks of the Armed forces, including in the field of information security based on command-staff exercise Caucasus-2016. The Astra Linux is serially delivered and applied in Russian Armed Forces since 2010, however now is decided to pass to its use completely.

"The Ministry of Defence made the decision that Linux is that system on which it is possible to rely. In the register of the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications now about 60 domestic operating systems, the choice fell on Linux", - he noted.

The director of the company also added that in Armed forces more than 50 thousand licenses of domestic OS are delivered. It is applied as a part of different samples of arms and military equipment, parts and connections of Military space forces, Navy, Ground forces, Airborne troops, information systems of bodies of military management, national command center of defense of the Russian Federation, the 333rd center of combat training of Ground forces of Russian Armed Forces (by Mulino) and also in military academies and schools of the Ministry of Defence.

Such tools as packet of office applications LibreOffice and electronic document management system Parchment are included in the package of Astra Linux. In addition, popular programs, for example, accounting system "1C", antiviruses productions of the companies "Kaspersky Lab" are compatible to the operating system and Dr. Web. The possibility of installation of the geoinformation supplement "Panorama" is also provided in Astra Linux.
