2020: Start of an optical network with quantum distribution of encryption keys in the Russian Federation

On September 29, 2020 it became known of start of a fiber line of connection with the quantum distribution of keys (QDK) of enciphering. By request Rosatom implemented this project Rostelecom using products of Kureyt and Kod bezopasnosti companies.

The KRK technology allows two legitimate parties of communication to receive the general key for enciphering which firmness is provided due to use of the principle of impossibility of cloning of an unknown quantum status.

In the project it was used by the fiber-optic communication line with attenuation at the level of 6.5 dB that as declared in Rostelecom, allowed to reach the high speed of development of encryption keys more than 1 Kbps. High transmission rate of encryption keys provided the high level of information security by frequent change of encryption keys by transfer of payload.

During project implementation the rupture of the quantum channel was simulated, the operability of the buffer of storage of secret keys which are used in cases of time unavailability of the quantum channel is successfully checked. Connection through an open authenticated channel is effectively set and also steady system operation is reached that confirmed stress testing, told in Rostelecom.

Transition to quantum technologies in communications for the importance is comparable with transition from copper to optics. Creation of communication lines using quantum distribution of encryption keys will allow to increase degree of protection of information in key communications in scales of the whole country — the director of work with corporate customers of PJSC Rostelecom Alexey Podryabinnikov noted.

Rosatom noted that quantum technologies are the main expected world break of the next decade in the field of digitalization which is capable not only to affect competitiveness and security of the countries, but also to lead to change of economic way.^[1]
