On October 6, 2023, the mining company Standard Power announced a project to equip its data centers (data centers) in the United States with nuclear mini-reactors. We are talking about using NuScale Power plants to produce clean, carbon-free energy.
The Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology introduced by Standard Power involves the use of relatively small nuclear plants and capacity. The units of such reactors are built at the plant, and then transported, assembled and put into operation at a specially prepared site. NuScale offers its own certified SMR technology - the only small modular reactor platform whose design has received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
As part of the project, Standard Power entered into a cooperation agreement with ENTRA1 Energy - an independent energy development and power generation company. SMR facilities will be located in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the energy they produce will be used to power nearby data centers. The total capacity of SMR plants will be almost 2 GW.
It is noted that the NuScale nuclear mini-reactor technology provides unique flexibility for utilities, industrial enterprises and government organizations seeking to reduce carbon dioxide emissions without compromising the energy supply to consumers. NuScale's structurally simple platform is said to provide an economically competitive, secure and scalable solution for a wide range of energy needs, including power generation, centralized heat supply, desalination, industrial scale hydrogen production, etc. Under Standard Power's plans, NuScale will supply 24 MW each of the 77 modules for the two facilities, adding up to 1848 MW of clean electricity.[1]
