A pilot project for the construction of corporate storage was launched at OTP Bank in 2022, when it was decided to migrate from Oracle Exadata. Over 15 years of using the current storage, the volume of which is ~ 100 TB, the organization has accumulated a large architectural debt. It was necessary to reduce the negative impact on source systems during the download of incremental data, to remove non-target functionality, to reduce infrastructure costs by using multi-temperature storage.

Based on the results of the OTP pilot project, the Bank developed the concept of a multi-component data platform consisting of a data lake, relational storage based on MPP architecture, ETL platform and BI tools. One of the important aspects of the choice was the plan for using Open Source, or solutions from the register of Russian software.

When selecting DBMS, the Bank's OTP specialists took into account the platform cost, functionality, and maintenance conditions. Arenadata DB was compared with other products presented on the Russian market and Greenplum vanilla. In terms of solution maturity, included services (advanced monitoring, disaster tolerance mechanisms, Arenadata Cluster Manager, support availability), the choice was made towards Arenadata DB.

There is a tendency in the market to create modular data platforms for dealing with large amounts of information, consisting of components that effectively solve business problems. This approach is more flexible, more efficient and cheaper to use than the monocomponent solutions that many still use. In addition, the set of technologies for solving analytical problems is changing.
