OpenAI buys $300 billion in computing power from Oracle

Customers: OpenAI

San Francisco; Information Technology

Contractors: Oracle

Project date: 2027/01

Oracle Corporation has entered into a $300 billion deal with the developer of OpenAI AI solutions. The contract for a period of five years provides for the developer to lease computing power in data centers with a total capacity of 4.5 GW in the United States. This was reported on September 10 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources[1].

The publication characterizes the deal as one of the largest cloud computing contracts ever signed. The agreement demonstrates how data center costs associated with AI development are reaching new highs, despite growing concerns about a potential bubble, the publication said.

At the same time, the indicated energy consumption of leased capacities is quite comparable to the amount of energy consumed by about four million households, the WSJ also notes.

OpenAI and Oracle sign one of the largest cloud contracts ever signed

According to the publication, the contract, which comes into force in 2027, will be a "risky adventure" for both parties. OpenAI is still a loss-making startup - in June, the company announced that its annual revenue is about $10 billion. This is less than a fifth of the $60 billion that the company will have to pay annually under a contract with Oracle.

Earlier, in July 2025, Oracle itself announced the signing of a large cloud computing contract with an annual income of $30 billion, but did not name[2] client. At that time, sources from the Financial Times reported that Oracle would build several data centers throughout the United States to fulfill the terms of the new contract. New data centers, according to the newspaper, may appear in states such as Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Wyoming, New Mexico, Georgetown, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Note that Oracle shares during trading on September 10 rose by 43.1%, to $345.72 at their peak, and Oracle's capitalization at 18:15 Moscow time reached $968.8 billion, which brought the American corporation into the top 10 largest in the S&P 500 index. Oracle shares rose sharply after the announcement of revenue of $317 billion, which the company should receive from future contracts. The corporation said there were three customers but did not disclose their names. After that, the WSJ announced a deal with OpenAI.
