2020: Migration on PostgreSQL DBMS
On July 27, 2020 the company FORS group"announced (FORS Group) project completion on migration of a monitoring system Zabbix from proprietary databases on PostgreSQL DBMS in commercial bank "Renaissance Credit". The project was executed in 6 months. The FORS provides further development and maintenance of a system and also training of administrators of bases data and others IT- specialists of bank to work on the implemented platform.
The shortest time of unavailability of a monitoring system of Zabbix exercising serviceability check of all nodes of computing infrastructure was advantage of the offered scheme of migration. In bank for July, 2020 more than 3000 hosts therefore continuous control of their loading and performance level is critical for all work of bank. A system aggregates key metrics on the basis of which builds diagrams and, analyzing this information, administrators monitor work of information systems and resources.
Initially Zabbix worked at proprietary DBMS which was decided to refuse for benefit of PostgreSQL for a number of reasons. First, Zabbix is compatible to PostgreSQL by default, without requiring additional development of a program code. In - the second, such transition will allow to reduce required number of the licensed servers and will lead to significant economy in the future. Thirdly, the project will show how to move further in the direction of step-by-step transfer to the selected platform and other banking systems of the customer. The main stages of the project included preparation, testing, actually, migration and commercial operation. On a test stage data from about 130 tables in which the configuration information of a monitoring system is stored were transferred. In order to avoid errors the metamodel of data was carefully studied and the priority of loading of each table is defined. After that a series of overload tests, works on optimization of functioning of DBMS and the final performance tests which showed was carried out, how successfully the database copes with loading.
It was required to perform tuning of some parameters for obtaining optimal results. "Fighting" migration took place successfully as all errors were eliminated already on a test stage. And literally for half a year the number of the stored data in a system increased more than twice from initial volume.
Our expectations from the project were met completely. Benefits from migration it is available – both technical, and economic. Significant economy due to optimization of server capacities, reduction in cost of licenses on basic software and transfer of capital costs to operating rooms was reached. It is important that at the same time the high level of scalability and security is provided.
