In November 2025, the world's first fully autonomous kitchen with a robot chef, which is able to cook up to 120 restaurant-quality dishes per hour without human participation, began work at the Rewe supermarket in Dusseldorf.
Autonomous cuisine (technical name - "CA-1 Series 4") was developed by the Munich company Circus SE as part of the new concept "Fresh & Smart" ("Fresh dishes prepared with artificial intelligence").
The robotic kitchen, located behind the glass facade, independently performs the entire process of cooking - from collecting ingredients to cooking, serving and subsequent cleaning. Dishes worth €6 are prepared in the presence of buyers in a few minutes.
| We provide convenience and pleasure to our customers, allowing them to look into the future, "noted Lars Klein, Chairman of the Board of REWE Region West. |
According to the developers, the CA-1 Series 4 model is an improved version of the robot cook, which is 450kg lighter thanks to the redesigned design. The system is equipped with modular grips with magnetic fastening and an improved induction heating system.
The robot automatically adjusts the speed of stirring depending on the type of dish and monitors the state of the ingredients using built-in sensors.
The pilot project in Düsseldorf is the first of three planned implementations of the CA-1 Series 4 model. Circus is also considering applying the technology to hospitals, universities and manufacturing facilities.
The new system demonstrates the potential to transform supermarkets into multifunctional spaces combining retail and automated catering services.[1]
