As TAdviser found out on October 6, 2023, Sberbank is undergoing a project to transfer employees' jobs to a new proprietary operating system based on Linux - SberOS. The bank confirmed this information.
Sberbank continues to transfer infrastructure to domestic software. At the moment, we are transferring employees' workplaces to our own Linux-based OS, "said TAdviser in Sberbank. |
The company chose not to disclose the details of this project yet.
From the description of vacancies for the development of SberOS and migration posted on the HH recruiting portal, it follows that the new operating system is based on Debian Linux and is positioned as "Sberbank's own development, which is independent of vendors and is completely controlled and changed for organization."
The SberOS distribution follows the rules and openness of the Debian community. It introduces the rolling-update model, uses the latest packages from Debian Testing and the last stable core 6.4, - indicated in one of the vacancies[1] |
And the SberOS migration project in Sberbank vacancies is described as "large-scale, ambitious, unique in the current environment."
In addition to its own assemblies of Linux distributions for the workplace, the bank also creates a remote management system for Linux.
SberOS is not the first operating system of Sberbank's own design. In September 2023, the bank's own server operating system Platform V SberLinux OS Server was included in the register of Russian software under the Ministry of Digital Development.
Under the SberLinux OS brand, Sberbank is developing a whole family of modern RPM-based distributions (distributions distributed in.rpm format and using the package manager of the same name - note TAdviser) to solve server and container computing problems using containerization and virtualization technologies.
And since November 2021, the domestic register ON has an operating system designed to embed virtual assistants "Salute" in smart devices. It can work in conjunction with AOSP (Android Open Source Project) or Linux. The product was originally called and "Salyut TV" was later renamed Star OS.
