Sberbank became interested in servers on open IBM Power processors

Sberbank monitors trends of development of systems with open standards and is interested in testing of servers on the processor with an open architecture of IBM POWER, bank representatives in May, 2016 told TAdviser.

In Russia on the POWER processor the KNS Group company (Yadro trademark) created within NCC and which is the first Russian participant of consortium OpenPOWER is going to release servers.

Sberbank notes that Yadro did not provide any copy of the server on the open processor yet and specific start dates of testing it is not designated.

The Deputy CEO of KNS Group Artem Ikoyev told TAdviser that in development the company has a high-performance computing system of high density in POWER8 SCM Turismo base. Planned date of receiving the prototypes ready to testing at customers, in the company designate December, 2016.

The server will contain 4 processors, to 48 cores, up to 384 flows and to RAM 8TB. The design of a system is absolutely original, within consortium OpenPOWER there was no development of a 4-socket system, Artem Ikoyev told TAdviser. According to him, all mechanical, circuitry, electric and program components are projected and KNS Group are developed. Production of printed circuit boards and mechanical components is supposed partially in the Russian Federation, partially in Southeast Asia, and assembly of finished goods will be made on the lines of the company placed on the production site of Aquarius in Shuya of the Ivanovo region.

The server is held for use in high density computing infrastructures, the systems of calculations in a bulk memory, machine learning, data storage of large volume. KNS Group note that interest in products developed by their company is shown "by many customers for whom more effective approaches in solving of tasks are required, designated above".

The Russian representative office of IBM told TAdviser that participants of consortium OpenPOWER can make own servers based on an open architecture of the POWER processor (POWER Linux) and also in the long term purchase the right to production of servers based on POWER processors running AIX OS. Also it is not just about local assembly, namely about production of own hardware-software product

The vice president for sales and the head of industrial solutions of IBM|Kirill Kornilyevtold Earlier IBM in Central and Eastern Europe TAdviser that the share of IBM in products which is prepared by the Russian partners based on the POWER processor makes no more than 30% if to speak about financial side. Thus, these products can be considered as the Russian and are suitable for the import substitution purposes. Such approach, according to Kornilyev, is approved also by the Russian intelligence agencies which are responsible for security.
