Biocad opened in Sochi laboratory of synthetic biology for school students for 22 million rubles

On September 1, 2018 in Sirius education center the company Biocad opened scientific laboratory. In the first day the laboratory was visited by the president Russia Vladimir Putin. The general investments into construction and equipment of the research center for school students made 22 million rubles, reported on September 3, 2018 TAdviser in Biocad.

The most part of means went for equipping of laboratory the hi-tech equipment — its total cost exceeded 20 million rubles, specified in the company. Pupils of Sirius will be able to master the high-performance tablet synthesizer ASM-2000 DNA/RNA (Russia) synthesizing 96 molecules within 8 hours will try to automate routine processes by means of two robotic Tecan Freedom EVO systems (Switzerland). Also in laboratory will install the modern genetic ABI analyzer 3500 xL (USA) used for sequencing on Sengera, its capacity makes 270 samples in 24 hours.

As told TAdviser in Biocad, the laboratory of synthetic biology in Sochi is based on technologies of three knowledge domains at once: bioinformation sciences, chemistry and molecular biology. Consolidation of approaches of computer simulation, chemical synthesis of oligonukleotid and assembly of genes of de novo allows to create the genetic constructions necessary for solving of tasks in the field of proteinaceous design, cellular engineering and molecular diagnostics.

According to the vice president of the company Aleksandra Glazkova, the laboratory was created, first of all, for promoting of biotechnologies among gifted school students of high school.

For us it is investments into the future, into a human capital. These talented and clever children will select the educational trajectories already soon, and we hope that thanks to the participation in work of laboratory, thanks to efforts of our lecturers and scientists many of them will select such knowledge domains as chemistry, biology, bioinformation science and by that they will strengthen intellectual potential of the biotechnology industry — Aleksandra Glazkova said.

In scientific laboratory children will be able to get acquainted with fundamentals of bioinformation science and the principles of synthesis of biopolymers, will have an opportunity both to master classical molecular and biological "kitchen", and to receive skills of work on the hi-tech robotic equipment.

In addition to laboratory practice, the training program of the educational platform will include lecture and seminar occupations in specially equipped educational class which can also serve as a conference room where different research teams for holding the presentations, discussion of cross-functional designs, exchange of experience and the ideas will gather.

It is supposed that participants of changes of Sirius, young people of the advanced school age will take part in activity of laboratory. Two employees of the company and also lecturers and researchers of Biocad scientific centers will work with children on a permanent basis.
