The Perm State University creates a digital library with participation of technologies of IBM

The Perm State University created a digital library on the IBM FileNet P8 platform with participation of Jet Infosystems company.

CCGT library contains more than 1.4 million units of educational, scientific, art and periodic literature. Annually about 1 million copies of printing editions are issued to teachers and students. Maintenance and permanent updating of fund is connected with big finance and labor costs. Aiming at the most effective use of budgetary funds and active information technology implementation, the management of the CCGT made the decision on creation in university of a modern digital library.

Implementation

The solution designed and implemented by Jet Infosystems company is constructed on the IBM FileNet P8 platform. Electronic editions are placed in the storage created based on a blade servers and DWH of IBM. On independent virtual machines the FileNet Content Manager servers are deployed: Application Engine, Content Engine, Processor Engine and Search Engine. Authentication of users is performed on the basis of the Active Directory directory service, and access and management of electronic documents are executed under the http protocol or by means of Java applets.

Result

Now the digital library is in a filling stage. By the beginning of new academic year about 13 thousand students and teachers of university will receive the status of regular readers.

"The maintenance of electronic funds costs on average by 2-3 times cheaper of traditional paper libraries. As annually spends about 10 million rubles only for acquisition of the CCGTs new printing editions, savings from transition to digital content will be very essential, – Vladimir Sushin, the director of the Internet Permskogo Gosudarstvennogo Universiteta center estimates project perspectives. – Thanks to the modern instruments of work with information implemented based on the advanced products and solutions of IBM, our students and teachers had an opportunity to use for training, self-education and scientific work the richest information resources from around the world".
