2016: Microsoft to install Windows 10 on 4 million DOD devices

On February 17, 2016, Microsoft announced that it had received a software update order from the Pentagon on several million computer devices. They will be transferred to the Windows 10 operating system.

According to Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of Microsoft Windows and Devices Group, by the end of 2016, the US Department of Defense plans to install Windows 10 on 4 million of its personal computers and mobile devices (including Surface tablets). The top manager of the American corporation called this project "unprecedented for a client with such a scale and complexity of the structure as the Ministry of Defense."[1]

One of the reasons that prompted the US Department of Defense to accelerate the transition to Windows 10 could be the biometric authentication technology implemented in the OS

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), we are talking about the largest project to install Windows 10 by mid-February 2016. By this time, the "ten" is used in 200 million active devices around the world, and the rate of penetration of the operating system is much higher compared to previous versions of Windows.

The US Department of Defense is a longtime Windows user, so it is not surprising that the department decided to switch to a more recent software platform. The speed of this update is surprising, says Pat Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, an IT market research firm.

Instead of, as usual, being among the last to roll out this update, they did so early in the cycle. Apparently, they are interested in this, "said Moorhead.

In his opinion, Microsoft will use a large order from the US defense department as advertising to promote Windows 10 among customers from the financial, medical and other sectors for which data management is important.

WSJ reviewers suggest that one of the reasons that prompted the US Department of Defense to accelerate the transition to Windows 10 is the technology implemented in the OS. biometric authentications At the same time, the Pentagon does not specify which security functions of the operating system will be used in the work of the defense department and its structures.[2]
