Project date: 2023/03

The National Institutes health care USA (NIH) has provided Cleveland Clinic researchers with a $3.14 million grant to create a digital twin of the health care system. This is stated in an official statement published on February 21, 2023.

We are talking about the development of technology that will help to better understand the differences in medical care for patients depending on a number of factors. These are economic, environmental and social criteria. In particular, the region of residence, working conditions, income, etc. will be analyzed. Digital twin models will be built on the basis of electronic medical records of approximately 250 thousand patients.

Where a person lives or works can affect their health, including life expectancy and the risk of developing diseases such as cancer or diabetes. Americans from socially and economically disadvantaged groups are more likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes, and their life expectancy may be 10 years less compared to wealthy citizens, said Dr. Jarrod Dalton, director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Population Health Research.

Using the funds provided, the researchers will form a digital twin infrastructure that copies real communities in terms of geographic, social and biological characteristics. For this, anonymized information from electronic medical records will be used. Then a number of factors affecting the state of health of citizens will be assessed. For example, project participants intend to find out how frequent and (or) economically determined changes of residence affect the well-being of people and the development of certain diseases. In addition, the effectiveness of the use of new medical services in terms of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases will be determined.[1]
