US Navy prints barracks on the 3D-printer. 500 sq.m in 40 hours

At the beginning of August, 2019 marines of the USA from System command of marines (MCSC) and the 7th engineering battalion (ESB) together with engineers from Research laboratory of construction (CERL) of Engineering army corps of the USA performed the first operation on 3D - printing of large concrete constructions in Shampeyna, the State of Illinois.

The team of engineers tested the new mixer of continuous action and three-inch nozzles which allowed to print several structures, including barracks and the bridge. So far it is only experiments, but the project manager on the automated construction of forwarding structures of Megan Kreiger is sure that these objects – only the first step. However he proved efficiency of technology: military learned to create barracks of 500 square meters in 40 hours.

By words Kreyger, transition from two-inch to a three-inch nozzle allows to print large structures quicker and with smaller costs. In the future commands assume to test with a four-inch nozzle. This experiment became the first case 3D - concrete printings using a three-inch nozzle, however testing is obliged by a considerable share of success to the new mixer. It represents commercial model of the device which was used earlier by marines in a repair kit of airfield.

Drawings of bunkers and barracks for printing were provided by fighting engineers. They are also going to construct the normal bunker similar to the 3D-printing version and to compare them during explosive or destructive tests on a polygon. Fighting engineers assume that the similar systems will have to be unrolled on the advanced operational base and begin work within several days after arrival. A system will quickly print small constructions which it will be possible to transport effectively and timely to control points and working posts.[1]
