Implementation of the technical design of the domestic shipbuilding CAD of heavy class
In September 2025, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) announced the completion of the Technical Project stage as part of the creation of a domestic heavy-class computer-aided design system for the shipbuilding industry. The project is aimed at developing a modern design environment and design and technological preparation for the production of marine vessels using Russian technological solutions.
According to the press service of USC, the project is being implemented jointly with the developer of SiSoft Development JSC with the financial support of the Russian Information Technology Development Fund. The grant agreement provides a resource base for creating a comprehensive software solution that can replace foreign counterparts in the field of marine design.
The terms of reference for CAD development were prepared by the functional customer of the USC JSC project together with the participants of the pilot system deployment zone. Leading enterprises of domestic shipbuilding, which will be the first users of the new technological platform, act as test sites. Their experience and requirements formed the basis of the technical specifications of the developed software.
The pilot zone of CAD deployment is formed by six key enterprises of the shipbuilding industry in Russia:
- JSC "Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering" Rubin ";
- Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau JSC;
- JSC "St. Petersburg Marine Bureau of Mechanical Engineering" Malakhit ";
- JSC Vympel Design Bureau;
- JSC Baltic Shipyard Yantar;
- Admiralty Shipyards JSC.
The success of the project is ensured by the existing scientific and technical reserve of the industry and the accumulated experience of SiSoft Development JSC in the field of creating specialized software. The interaction of the developer with the technical specialists of the pilot zone allows you to take into account the practical needs of production processes when creating software modules of the system.[1]
Creation of heavy shipbuilding CAD
The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), together with the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau and SiSoft Group of Companies, is developing a domestic heavy-class computer-aided design system. The project is aimed at the transition of Russian shipbuilding to domestic software and optimization of interaction between all industry participants. This was reported by the Almaz Central Design Bureau in July 2025.
Alexander Egorov, an expert at the design bureau, presented a report "Digitalization and information modeling at the Almaz Central Design Bureau in the design of civil vessels." The speech highlighted the main directions of digital transformation of the shipbuilding industry and the role of computer-aided design systems in this process.
The main task of heavy shipbuilding CAD is to ensure maximum optimization of interaction between designers, construction plants, customers, regulators and operators. The project participants will work in a single digital environment of consolidated data, which will significantly increase the efficiency of all shipbuilding processes.
The development of heavy shipbuilding CAD is based on a single information model of the vessel. This model contains all information about the ship and its elements, including information about the cost of components, the labor intensity of various types of shipbuilding operations, the most labor-intensive or expensive operations.
The creation of heavy CAD represents one of the key milestones of the digital transformation of the shipbuilding industry in Russia. The ultimate goal of the project is a complete transition to digital technologies of the entire life cycle of the vessel - from design to operation and disposal of civilian ships.[2]
2022: The start of the creation of the Russian CAD for the design of ships
On March 10, 2022, it became known that a project for the creation of a shipbuilding computer-aided design (CAD) system was launched in Russia. The project is carried out under the auspices of the United Shipbuilding Corporation. Read more here.
