Walmart began delivering groceries from the supermarket to UAVs. VIDEO

Contractors: Zipline

Project date: 2025/05

At the end of May 2025, it became known that the American company Walmart launched a service for delivering food from supermarkets in Texas using unmanned aerial vehicles. The partner in the project is Zipline, a startup that has developed a courier delivery system using fully autonomous drones.

Goods are sent by air aboard P2 Zip drones. Such devices are capable of transporting goods weighing up to 3.6 kg at a distance of up to 16 km. Arriving at the destination, the drone hovers at an altitude of several tens of meters, after which a special robotic container with goods descends from its lower part on a mash on a cable. This module is equipped with its own screws and sensors, thanks to which it can compensate for deviations due to wind exposure. After descending to a given point, the container opens the hatch doors at the bottom and leaves the food bag on the ground.

With airlift, Walmart customers within reach of the P2 Zip can receive orders within 30 minutes of checkout. The retail chain says its 4,600 stores are located within 16km for 90% of the U.S. population: It opens up unique opportunities for the company to organize drone delivery on a large scale. In turn, Zipline CEO and co-founder Keller Rinaudo Cliffton emphasizes that P2 Zips drones provide the highest accuracy.

People who have run out of their favorite snack, who forgot to buy eggs at a grocery store, who need diapers for a child, or who need over-the-counter medicines, will be able to get all these products as quickly and hassle-free as possible, says Zipline.[1]
