2019: The project on upgrade of infrastructure for calculations of Vienna Scientific Cluster-4

On December 13, 2019 the companies Lenovo also Intel announced the cooperation in the project on upgrade of infrastructure for high-performance computing supercomputerVienna Scientific Cluster-4 (VSC-4).

As it was reported, VSC-4 will be used for support of the projects meaning the analysis of Big Data and use of machine learning. Requests began to cover broader spectrum of tasks, including from such nonconventional spheres as biotechnologies, social and the humanities. Research projects include forecasting of impact of climate change for the rivers and areas of flooding; help to the different countries in preparation for change of weather conditions; examination as certain drugs react with certain proteins in a human body; modeling of a status of the Universe soon after the Big Bang.

Lenovo provided delivery servers Lenovo ThinkSystem SD650, equipped with processors Intel Xeon Scalable of the second generation and Direct Water-Cooling technology of third generation. For December, 2019 the built-in liquid cooling of servers allows to bring about 90% of heat out of a system that considerably reduces the needs for use of air cooling using fans, reduces energy consumption and increases performance.

The computing cluster consists of 790 ThinkSystem SD650 nodes with 37,920 Intel Xeon processors Scalable equipped with technology of intellectual performance improvement of Intel DL Boost. Servers are united in network with capacity 100 Gbps and architecture of Intel Omni-Path - it is the connection increasing performance of applications, improving balancing of loading and providing high scalability.
