On June 14, 2018 it became known that the Volgograd Arena stadium at which play the games World Cup 2018 in Russia was constructed using the software of Tekla Structures of Trimble company. This tool implementing philosophy of BIM (Building Information Modelling) allowed contractors – project and installation contractors - to qualitatively perform complex work, having met the tough deadline. The stadium has the unique structural elements.
The stadium with a capacity of 45 thousand people is constructed around Mamayev Kurgan, the historical place of Volgograd known since World War II. The stadium is distinguished by an unusual guy roof and facades in the form of the relief crossed rhombuses similar to five-pointed stars. The weight of the main metalwork of stadium is 8.5 thousand tons. Owing to technical complexity the decision on concentration of deliveries and installation in "some hands" to provide high accuracy, as was made at production, and assembly. The Russian-Italian joint venture JV Konar-Chimolai located in Chelyabinsk became these "hands".
The main difficulties consisted in a combination of the big sizes of structural elements and to very strict requirements to production and installation. For example, beams of a pressure ring have length of 16 meters, at the same time admission longwise does not exceed 1 mm, and admission on the angle of installation of the terminal flange only 0.05 degrees. Mounting welding at installation of constructions is completely excluded that also imposed strict requirements to accuracy in the course of production.
It is successful use of modern BIM technologies helped to cope with a task. In particular, use of the software of Tekla Structures allowed to create constructive and difficult three-dimensional models of structural elements in the shortest possible time. In turn, these models allowed to exchange data with partners and to route information on CNC machines live. Data transmission from model directly on machines allows to conduct flexibly process, it is essential to reduce production time and to provide high accuracy.
