2024: IPv6 Support
VAS Experts implemented support for IPv6 and DualStack IPv4/IPv6 protocols in the infrastructure of the Kazakh telecom operator X-COM. Now all its subscribers get access to the new version of the protocols by default. VAS Experts announced this on January 9, 2025.
IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are key components of the Internet, providing data transfer between devices on the network. At one time, IPv4 became the main addressing standard, but with the growing number of connected devices, it became obvious that its 32-bit address space could not meet the needs of users. To solve this problem, IPv6 was created, which provides 128-bit addresses and new features such as built-in security support, improved QoS (quality of service), auto configuration and many others.
Following the requirements of subscribers, the Kazakh telecom operator X-COM has transferred its infrastructure from IPv4 to IPv6. VAS Experts has implemented a solution based on the SCAT DPI multifunctional platform. The translation process consisted of several stages: obtaining addresses in RIPE and distributing networks; network planning; Configuring BGP Configuring DNS integration with GGC (Google Global Cache) and setting up Radius.
As of January 2025, IPv6 is available to all X-COM subscribers by default. 21.3% of users have already activated it. The introduction of IPv6 allowed the telecom operator to build a system of individual IP addresses, improve routing and configuration, and improve security.
IPv6 is not just an Internet protocol standard, but a necessity dictated by realities. IPv4 restrictions, such as the lack of addresses and the complexity of the network architecture, make the transition to IPv6 an inevitable step for companies seeking to ensure the stable operation of their networks and prepare for future challenges, said Artem Tereshchenko, VAS Experts Development Director. |
The world of network technologies will continue to move towards wider application of IPv6. Increasing the share of IPv6 traffic and gradually shifting the proportions between IPv4 and IPv6 will lead to an improvement in the global Internet ecosystem. However, this process will be evolutionary, not revolutionary.
