Adaptive Server Enterprise
Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) is a high-performance relational database management system for crucial environments of intensive data processing. A system provides production efficiency and capacity, supporting a broad spectrum of platforms. DBMS of an enterprise scale, Sybase ASE is traditionally used in the most responsible and exacting systems to performance, saving at the same time simplicity in service and total cost of ownership (TCO), low among "big" DBMS.
The key ASE functions include patent means of enciphering, the technology of database splitter expecting the patent technology of request processing for "intellectual" transactions and an instrument for ensuring of permanent readiness in the clustered environments. Inclusion of means of the organization of databases in RAM in ASE 15.5 provides the possibilities of virtualization of data and scaling crucial for the organizations with high amounts of data and a large number of simultaneous users, regardless of whether a system in a public cloud or own data center of the organization is unrolled.
Functions and advantages of Adaptive Server Enterprise
Provides extraordinary performance
- Allows to reach in exacting IT environments speed in millions of transactions per minute at the size of databases measured by terabytes at the same time maintaining high growth rates of amounts of data and number of transactions
Reduces risks
- Helps the organizations to avoid disastrous and expensive failures, such as system failure, unforeseen accidents or date leaks
- Protects information systems from typical threats, including ensuring data security, stability of a system and disaster recovery
- Allows IT service to offer technical support with small response time and to reduce risks
Increases efficiency
- Allows IT service to provide higher level of service - even at reduction of the budget
- Effectively works with hardware, increasing coefficient of their use and providing high performance at decrease in the total costs
- Simplifies administration tasks of databases
Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15
Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15 is the server of new generation which is specially designed for management big and superbig by databases in the conditions of constantly increasing flow of transactions, at the same time having saved quality of the cost-efficient platform for data management.
Key innovations of ASE 15 include: optimization for management of big DB, data encryption on a disk, intellectual partition, the new patent technology of request processing which showed significant increase in performance and also new opportunities (XML, Web Services, other) on management of unstructured data. This version contains a set of the new solutions and improvements on the one hand meeting today's requirements of our clients, and on the other hand, the crucial business systems forming a basis for long-term strategic innovation in the market.
Except improvement of functionality of a core which consists in fall forward, efficiency and degree of data availability, - the functions which are necessary for systems with intensive transaction loading, Sybase announces two new options: "ASE In-Memory Databases" and "Advanced Backup Services Tivoli™ Storage Manager".
SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise Cluster Edition
The systems of high readiness on the basis of SAP Sybase ASE CE are focused on solving of tasks:
- Increase in fault tolerance (high availability). SAP Sybase ASE CE excludes a situation at which failure of the server or its software leads to failure of all system in general. At failure of a copy of DBMS or node of a cluster the database remains available, and users continue work through other working nodes.
- Increase in scalability. In process of growth of the resource requirements SAP Sybase ASE CE allows to add new nodes to a cluster without stopping of applications - it is possible to increase gradually the total power of cluster system by adding of new nodes. Use of standard inexpensive servers in this aspect is economically more profitable as the cost of the hardware of such cluster can be several times less than the cost of the big SMP server, equivalent on power.
- Independence of additional software. The cluster software of SAP Sybase ASE CE – the full and self-sufficient solution which is not requiring any additional cluster solutions of third-party producers.
- Automatic transfer of sessions of users. In case of accident on one of nodes, a session of users it is transparent are transferred to the working nodes of a cluster of SAP Sybase ASE. At the same time, if at the time of failure on a node of a cluster transaction was executed, it will repeatedly be executed by the application initiating it after switching to other node. This technology provides "masking" of failures of components of a cluster from users.
- Transparency. For users and SAP applications Sybase ASE CE looks as the normal database with the single copy. SAP Sybase ASE CE is characterized by simplicity of management. Operations on installation and setup of a copy of the database on one of nodes can be extended to other nodes automatically.
- Load distribution. SAP Sybase ASE CE has technology of management of loadings for ensuring the best performance of applications. During creation of new user SAP Sybase ASE CE sessions can select the least loaded cluster node, evenly distributing loading between nodes.
Competition to Oracle and Microsoft
Oracle is going to release new means of migration which allows to port clients applications under SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise directly on Oracle databases and also on Exadata. Representatives of Oracle said it in August, 2012 during the OpenWorld conference.
Migration on Oracle DBMS from other platforms was already provided by means of Oracle SQL Developer, but rather large volume of program developments for an environment of Oracle was all the same provided. The new tool from Oracle should simplify significantly the specified process as alteration of the primary source will not be required.
Means of Oracle will also be able to interact with Sybase T-SQL so the role of administrators will come down eventually only to testing and installation of necessary patches before deployment of a product on Oracle Exadata.
From information provided at a conference it is not absolutely clear, than the new tool will differ from the tool which is already provided earlier under the name of Sybase-to-Oracle.
Oracle feels threat in implementation of SAP of new strategy for transfer of the ERP of users on own database management systems, in particular, of Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) and SAP HANA. At this Sybase ASE it is ground not only against products of Oracle: for example, in July, 2012 tools for migration with the Microsoft SQL Server on open-source MySQL were announced.
