2020: Most popular TV platforms

According to the research company Strategy Analytics, in 2020 Tizen strengthened its position as the most popular TV platform due to the fact that the number of users of its device increased by 21% year on year to 162.3 million units. We are talking about platforms designed to watch video content on Smart TV TVs.

Stable growth was also observed in Android TV solutions from Google (+ 42%), Roku TV OS (+ 40%) and Amazon Fire OS (+ 35%), while Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and Google Cast experienced a certain decline. According to a report by Global TV Streaming Platform and Vendor Market Share, the total number of devices used worldwide for streaming TV increased by 122 million in 2020, reaching 1.28 billion. In general, Tizen retained a leading position with a share of 12.7%. Tizen is followed by WebOS from LG (7.3%), Sony PlayStation (6.4%) and Fire OS (6.4%). It is assumed that the number of Tizen devices used will increase to 184 million by the end of 2021, while Google, LG, Roku and Amazon will continue to fight for other leading positions.

The most popular TV platforms in 2020

Streaming TV platforms such as Tizen, WebOS, Fire OS and Roku TV OS are the foundation of a new era of television and video viewing. For five years, Samsung's Tizen has become entrenched in the new Olympus, overtaking more famous platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox and Apple TV OS. Now Samsung is actively monetizing Tizen, offering the platform's capabilities for integrating and distributing targeted advertising to viewers. Amazon, Roku and Android TV are also rapidly developing and are likely to compete fiercely with Samsung in the 2020s.

At the same time, significant regional differences in the use of platforms are noted. So, Roku is the leading platform in the United States, where it controls almost 20% of the television devices used. However, Tizen is the leader in 22 of the 25 countries investigated in the report, and WebOS ranks second in 13 markets.[1]
