2018: Android set-top boxes banned in Singapore
In November 2018, the High Court of Singapore issued a ruling according to which Internet providers must block access to applications in set-top boxes that allow watching films, TV programs and sports broadcasts. Mainly we are talking about consoles on the Android TV platform.
The court made such a decision at the request of Singnet, Fox Networks Group Singapore, NGC Network Asia, Fox International Channels (US) and The Football Association Premier League.
According to the Asian Video Industry Association (AVIA), applications that are pre-installed on Android TV consoles "grossly violate copyright because they act as gateways for broadcasting pirated content," while the equipment itself is openly sold in retail and online stores, as well as at IT exhibitions.
The industry group also says that such applications and devices negatively affect companies engaged in the production and distribution of legal content. Users, buying a set-top box, pay only for it and get "unauthorized access" to video content, bypassing subscription payments for a month or a year.
Coalition Against Piracy General Manager - represents the interests of telecommunications operators, creators and distributors of video content) Neil Gane said that the court's decision to ban Android consoles confirms Singapore's reputation as a defender of intellectual property rights in Asia.
After the ban came into force, Channel NewsAsia journalists under the guise of customers went to Singapore stores to see if its sellers were complying. By November 26, 2018, the consoles were still on sale. Some employees of retail outlets willingly talked about ways to bypass the lock.[1]
