Anesthesia

Many surgeries cannot be performed without adequate anesthesia. Modern anesthesia is, most often, a multicomponent component, when several drugs are used to provide comfortable sleep, anesthesia, stabilization of the autonomic nervous system, relaxation, correction of water and electrolyte disorders. Contrary to many patient concerns, anesthesia is safe when used correctly.

Dutch Ministry of Health sounds alarm over high CO2 emissions from anaesthetic fumes

On December 20, 2022, the Dutch Association of Anesthesiologists (NVA) announced that it had received a grant of €500,000 to reduce CO2 emissions from anesthesia vapors. It is assumed that this will improve the environmental situation in the country.

The money will be provided by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Social Welfare and Sports. It is noted that anesthesia pairs are strong greenhouse gases, which are 440-6,800 times stronger than CO2: this makes them one of the main sources of the greenhouse effect. The health sector is estimated to be responsible for 7% of CO2 emissions in the Netherlands. The funds received will be aimed at developing methods that ensure "more rational use of anesthesia vapors" without compromising the quality of medical care. The project is designed for two and a half years.

"In the hospital, the operating complex is the most polluting department. As professionals, we are pleased to take responsibility for improving the situation in this area. Therefore, we are very pleased that the Ministry of Health, Social Security and Sports has provided funding for additional research in the field of more effective use of anesthesia vapors, "said Caroline van der Marel, President of NVA.

The NVA organization is responsible for conducting research and developing recommendations for the use of anesthetic gases. As part of the new project, which will go to the funds provided, it is planned to develop a professional standard in the field of sustainable use of anesthetics, supported by all anesthesiologists in the Netherlands. The result of the work is expected to be a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by the country's medical institutions.[1]

Russia has created a new method of suborbital pain relief

Scientists at the Medical Institute of Northeastern Federal University have created a new method of suborbital pain relief. The press service of the university announced this on October 20, 2022.

The development provides conditions for improving the safety and effectiveness of anesthesia of the suborbital nerve during dental interventions.

New method of suborbital pain relief created

According to the developers, the technology can provide conditions for improving the safety and effectiveness of anesthesia by accurately determining the topography of the suborbital hole, the injection point, the direction and depth of immersion of the needle into the area of the suborbital hole. At the same time, complex anatomical and topographic landmarks, which are used in the classical method of infraorbital anesthesia, are completely excluded. This approach minimizes the injury of the neurovascular bundle in the area of the suborbital opening and increases the quality of dental care provided.

In the future, we plan to develop other methods of local anesthesia in the maxillofacial region, which will contribute to increasing the analgesic effect and the safety of anesthesia, - said Alexander Chakhov, associate professor of the Department of Therapeutic, Surgical, Orthopedic Dentistry and Dentistry of Childhood.

According to him, a new method of anesthesia has been introduced into the program of training students, starting from the third year of the Department of Dentistry, and students of the Faculty of Postgraduate Training of Doctors of MI SVFU.

Patients immersed in virtual reality need less anesthesia on operations

At the end of September 2022, the results of a clinical study conducted by scientists from the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Colorado Hospital and the School of Medicine were published. Immersion in virtual reality can reduce the amount of anesthesia required in some types of hand surgery, a study has found. Scientists have proven that patients using VR can only go through the entire surgical procedure with local anesthesia. Read more here.

Dioscoride is the first to apply the term "anesthesia"

Anesthesia, as an integral part of treatment, has been known to humanity for a very long time. Since ancient times, many Native American tribes have used the juice of various plants to reduce sensitivity. The ancient Greek doctor and philosopher Dioscorides is also known, who, traveling with the Roman army during the time of Emperor Nero and practicing medicine, drew attention to the fact that the use of soothing drugs prepared from a mandrake allows more successful operations. This increased the chances of recovery in wounded warriors. By the way, it was he who first applied the term known today - "anesthesia."
