2025: Chinese brands share reaches 9.4%

The share of Chinese brands in the British car market in May 2025 reached 9.4% thanks to a 408% increase in BYD sales and the release of new players such as Omoda and Jaecoo from Chery.

The lack of local mass electric car manufacturers has paved the way for Chinese companies, especially amid a 36% drop in Tesla sales.

2024:14% decline in car production to 779,584

In 2024, 779,584 cars were produced in Britain, which is 13.9% less than the result for 2023, when 905,117 cars were produced. Such data are provided in a report by the Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Sellers (SMMT), published on January 30, 2025.

The decrease in production volumes is due to several factors. Among them are the cessation of some models due to the conversion of factories to electric vehicles, weakness in key global markets and a slowdown in the transition to electrification amid difficult economic conditions.

The British market in 2024 received 176,019 cars produced in the country: this is 8% less than the previous year (191,247 cars). Exports on an annualized basis decreased by 15.5% - from 713,870 to 603,565 units. Thus, in the total mass of cars produced in Britain, 77.4% were exported against 78.9% in 2023.

It is noted that 77.5% of British car exports (467,937 units) accounted for the three largest markets: European Union (54%), (16.9 USA %) and (China 6.6%). On an annualized basis, exports to the EU and China decreased by 24.3% and 21.8%, respectively, while to the United States, on the contrary, increased by 38.5%. The output of electric and hybrid cars in Britain in 2024 decreased by 20.4%, amounting to 275,896 units. Such models accounted for 35.4% of the total volume of cars produced in the country.

In addition to cars, 125,649 commercial vehicles were produced in Britain in 2024. This is 4% more compared to 2023, which is the best indicator since 2008.[1]

Car production fell to the level of 1956 to 860,000 units

British automakers in 2021 experienced their worst year since 1956 due to a global shortage of semiconductors, personnel problems associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the closure of a key Honda Motor plant.

Production fell about 7% to less than 860,000 vehicles in 2021, the lowest in more than six decades and about a third below pre-pandemic levels.

The country is counting on the modernization of local factories.
