2023: Launch of Europe's fastest metro line to the airport

On January 22, 2023, the fastest metro line in Europe was launched in Istanbul. It connected the Turkish metropolis with the international airport in its European part.

Trains will follow the new line at a speed of 90-120 km/h. The length of the line with the connection of new stations to it will be 69 km. The vehicles operate in a 4-car train with a maximum capacity of 1.1 thousand passengers. The appearance of the trains is decorated with elements of Turkish culture, for example, tulip motifs. The metro is designed to carry 800 thousand passengers per day. The metro line will cover the distance from Kyagytkhane district to Istanbul International Airport in 24 minutes. Istanbul International Airport began operating in 2019, and its complete completion is scheduled for 2025.

In Istanbul, launched the fastest metro line in Europe to the airport

The emergence of a new metro line is a historic event for Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the opening ceremony on January 22, 2023. According to him, thanks to the implementation of this project, Turkey has shown the whole world its strength and capabilities in the construction of the metro.

Fully automated driverless trains were built by the Chinese company CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co (CRRC ZELC). CRRC ZELC signed a contract for the purchase and commissioning with the Main Directorate of Infrastructure Investments of Turkey back in January 2020. According to the manufacturer's company, the 34km metro line boasts the fastest trains in Turkey, and the vehicles serving the line are China's first driverless 120km/h automated metro project for the foreign market. The contract was concluded for the supply of 176 metro cars and required 60% localization in Turkey.[1]
