Agreement with Mozambique to build a hydroelectric power station on Zambezi to support its gas projects

On December 13, 2023, the Mozambican government signed an agreement with the French energy company EDF to build a new hydroelectric power station. Another company from France, TotalEnergies, also received a stake in the project.

The dam and hydroelectric plant will be built along the Zambezi River in northern Mozambique and will generate 1,500 MW of electricity in the first phase. The first turbine of the hydroelectric power station should start working by 2031, wrote "Rybar."

The construction of a new hydroelectric power station is aimed primarily at supporting new-old projects for the production and import of liquefied gas, which the EU needs after the outbreak of a conflict with Russia.

In the wake of interest in the gas-rich province of Kabu Delgadu, energy companies are striving to stake out as many assets as possible in order to diversify energy sources, as well as to cut off the opportunity for non-European competitors to "snatch a piece of gas pie."

2020: Buying Britain's largest electric car refuelling chain Source London

In September 2020, it was announced that the French oil and gas company Total is acquiring Source London, the UK's largest electric vehicle refueling network.

The network of electric stations, which Total acquires from Bollore Group, consists of more than 1.6 thousand points.

Total intends to provide the charging grid with 100% renewable electricity supplied by a subsidiary of Total Gas & Power Limited.

"This acquisition in the United Kingdom, already active in installing and operating charging point networks in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Brussels (Belgium), strengthens Total's position as a key player in electric mobility in Europe. Thus, the group continues its development in large European cities in accordance with its desire to create more than 150 thousand charging points for electric vehicles by 2025, "the company said in a statement.

The deal is expected to close before the end of the year.

Criminals via the Internet stole 120 thousand liters of fuel at gas stations

At the end of March 2019, French law enforcement agencies arrested five suspects in the theft of 120 thousand liters of fuel from gas stations in Paris. The attackers hacked the gas stations via the Internet due to the fact that the owners of the gas station did not take care of changing the standard passwords in computer equipment.

A group of five men aged 30-40 years old purchased a special device through which they connected to the IT systems of the gas station of Total and were able to drain gasoline or diesel fuel in any volume.

Total gas station owners did not change the standard PIN to reset the price and set limits for refueling

The manipulations were facilitated by the fact that the code did not change access to the gas station settings and remained by default "0000." Hackers use this password to reset prices and remove restrictions on refueling.

Scammers came to the gas station at night in two cars. A person in one of the cars activated an electronic device and connected to a refueling computer system. The second vehicle, which was most often a van, poured fuel into a huge tank containing up to 2-3 thousand liters.

The attackers sold the stolen fuel through social networks. They called the buyers the time and place of meeting, they came and refueled at reduced prices.

The criminal scheme was uncovered in April 2018 when police arrested one suspect in a Paris suburb. During the arrest, he had the same device for remote hacking of gas stations. The remaining members of the criminal group were detained only a year later.

According to the police, fraudsters earned about 150 thousand euros on the sale of stolen fuel.

As noted by ZDNet, fuel prices in France are among the highest in the European Union. In this regard, protests are constantly taking place in the country.[1]
