2022: Installation of a monument near the city of Soroka in Moldova

On September 29, 2022, in Moldova, near the city of Soroka, a memorial to memory was opened at the scene of the shooting of 6,300 Jews during World War II. The initiator and sponsor of the creation of the memorial is Grigory Efimovich Reutberg.

"I lived for the first 17 years in Soroka, now this is the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The idea to open a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust in my historical homeland came to me a long time ago. For a long time, architects and I chose a project. We watched similar monuments in other places. The monument was ready in 2019, but for various reasons the opening was postponed for several years, the COVID-19 pandemic also intervened, says Grigory Efimovich. - And finally, on September 29, 2022, the opening of this memorial complex took place. It is located in a very beautiful place - in the Coseutian forest on the bend of the Dniester. Across the Dniester River are the Ukrainian city of Yampol and the large village of Tsekinovka. Near the border with Romania. I am very pleased that from the very beginning the project received moral support from the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, and from local authorities, from the Jewish community, and even from ordinary people to whom we turned for help. "

Despite the sad occasion, the opening ceremony of the memorial was very solemn and warm. The event brought together many people: relatives of the victims, and public and state figures from around the world, and local residents.

"The shooting of 6,300 Jews, half of them children, I perceive as a personal tragedy. Among the dead are my relatives. We must not forget about those terrible events. We must not forget that if they happened, then their repetition is still possible. I want to quote the lines from "Requiem" by Robert Rozhdestvensky "Remember everyone by name, remember our grief with our own... It is necessary - not dead! It is necessary - alive!. " I think we all need it
.'

The memorial to the shot Jews in the city of Soroka is a composition of twenty bronze steles symbolizing chopped tree trunks. The first row is made of marble. It contains the names of thousands of Jews shot, whose identity has been established to date. The name of the memorial refers to the total number of victims among the Jewish population of the district: "The place of torment and death of six thousand Jews killed by the Nazis in 1941."
