Torvalds Linus of Bénédicte (Torvalds Linus Benedict), is known also as Linus Torvalds  is the Finnish software engineer. Is the actual author of operating system kernel of GNU/Linux  — in some way the most popular OS among the open source. Still is engaged in work with/Linux as the project coordinator.

Biography

Linus Torvalds was born in Helsinki on December 28, 1969 in family of journalists Anna and Niels Torvalds. Received a name in honor of Linus Pollinga, the Nobel laureate in the field of chemistry. Linus's grandfather, to Olya Torvalds, the poet, was known among creative elite of Finland. One more maternal grandfather, Leo Tyornkvist, professor of statistics at the university of Helsinki, was for Linus final authority. At school the author of Linux had a reputation for "botanist" and unsociable. More than once it was subject to mockeries of peers not only because of character and hobbies, but also because of politically views of the father. Niels Torvalds was an ardent communist, and even spent year in Moscow. Was fond of the exact sciences and was interested in humanitarian objects a little. In 11 years Linus mastered Commodore VIC-20 and became interested in programming on Basic. In 17 years Torvalds Jr. purchased on the saved money latest for those times Sinclair QL at the price of 2000 US dollars. In 1988 Linus goes to the University Helsinki which with success ends in 1996 with degree of the master of cybernetics. Nowadays Torvalds lives with the wife and children in the city of Portland, State of Oregon, USA. Since 1997 worked in Transmeta Corp company then went to Open Source Development Labs.

Suspension of work on Linux to rethink the role in community

On September 16, 2018 Linus Torvalds announced suspension of the work on Linux kernel to rethink the role in community. He told about it in mailing     of Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML).

Torvalds decided to take a vacation, and for the period of a break with positions of the curator of development of a kernel of Linux it will be replaced by Greg Kroah-Hartman who is responsible for support of a stable branch of a core.  Tasks of completion of development of the version of Linux 4.19 which by September 17 is at the fourth stage   of Release Candidate (RC) are assigned to it.

Linus Torvalds did not call exact terms of return to work. Most likely, it will occur by the time of the beginning of creation of a core 4.20. At the same time Torvalds assumed that he can depart from development of Linux completely.

Torvalds decided to resign the head of development of Linux for some time to carry out introspection and to be engaged in self-development. To it he was pushed by a case when he  mixed  the place and time of the Linux Kernel Summit 2018 conference and planned rest with family for this time. Linus suggested to hold the summit without it, but organizers understood Linus's position and voted for transfer of an action from Vancouver to Edinburgh that that could take part in it without canceling of a family trip.

Such solution of community, according to Torvalds, does not correspond to his behavior — he apologized for it. The creator of Linux also recognized the "careless attacks in e-mails which were nonprofessional and inappropriate".^[1]

Return to work on Linux

On October 22, 2018 Linus Torvalds returned to work on Linux slightly more than a month later after he announced a holiday to rethink the role in Linux community, to learn to communicate with people and to understand their feelings.

Return of the creator of Linux was announced by Greg Kroah-Hartman who temporarily substituted Torvalds at a position of the curator of development of a kernel of Linux.

At the Open Source Summit Europe conference  in Scotland (on October 22-24, 2018) Linus Torvalds met 40 leading developers, thereby having confirmed the return to development of Linux.

Commenting on the vacation taken in September, 2018, Linus said that he in the communication never considered an emotional status of people, was too exacting and rough to other developers, spoiled the relations in community and forced people to refuse participation in the project. According to him, he understood importance of the human relation in discussions and took a detached view of himself.

It is not the first case when Torvalds decided to depart from development of a kernel of Linux temporarily. He took a similar vacation in 2005, and then during "rest" he developed the known version management system of projects of Git.

Meanwhile Torvalds suggests to adopt the code of behavior of developers of a core Linux based on the known code of Contributor Covenant which is already used by many large projects open source.

In new Code of Conduct all participants of community Linux have identical rights regardless of the social status, nationality, religion, a sex, age, education and other possible differences.^[2]

• According to some information Torvalds is the author of only 2 % of a system kernel of Linux, however all fundamental decisions are made by him. Linus owns the Linux trademark.

• According to the Time magazine for 2000 among "people of year" Torvalds appeared on the 17th place. The same edition included the programmer in the list of the most influential people of the world in 2004.

• The penguin of Tuks (Tux) became the character of the Linux operating system in 1996 when Torvalds asked Internet users for the help in the choice as "identification mark". Larry Ewing option was as a result selected.

• Linus's wife by name to Tuva with which Torvalds got acquainted in the fall of 1993 is a six-time champion of Finland in karate. She gave rise to the husband of three daughters: Patricia Miranda, Daniela Yolanda and Celesta Amanda.
