2021: IBM Power E1080

On September 8, 2021, the company IBM announced the release IBM Power E1080 of the first model of the servers IBM processor Power10 family, developed specifically for hybrid environments cloudy. More. here

2020: IBM Power10 Announcement - Flagship Server Processor

On August 17, 2020, IBM introduced the first processor in its range, manufactured according to a 7-nm process. We are talking about the Power10 chip, which the manufacturer calls a platform for the implementation of enterprise-level hybrid cloud systems in data centers.

Hybrid cloud computing requires a robust architecture to perform high-level complexity tasks, such as working with machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. The new IBM Power10 processor meets customer requirements and provides a high level of performance and security, "said Steven Leonard, Chief information officer of IBM Cognitive Systems, whose words are quoted in a press release.

The flagship processor in the IBM line, the size of a postage stamp, contains 18 billion transistors distributed across 30 cores. Power 9 uses 12 cores. IBM engineer and Power10 architect William Starke said that the maximum single-chip solution will include no more than 15 SMT8 cores (capable of executing up to eight threads at a time), and the two-chip module will offer 30 SMT8 cores, respectively.

According to IBM, an initial analysis showed that Power10-based servers can perform three times more processes than Power 9-based machines at the same power consumption. The company also promises significant acceleration for specialized types of workloads related, for example, to AI models and encryption algorithms.

Power10 delivers significantly better encryption performance by quadrupling the number of AES encryption blocks per core compared to IBM Power9.

The start of production of the Power 10 processor is scheduled for the second half of 2021. The contract assembly of the product will be handled by Samsung Electronics.[1]
