At the end of June 2023, British researchers from Addenbrooke's Hospital announced the development of a new technology based on artificial intelligence to accurately destroy cancer cells.

Microsoft The solution is designed to speed up the work with images of internal organs and tissues, thereby significantly reducing the waiting time for patients before starting radiation therapy. The fact is that in the process computed tomography a series of hundreds of pictures is formed, which can take many hours for specialists to process. In each picture, the doctor must circle the organ, which will be subjected to chemotherapy, in order to then recreate a three-dimensional image from these contours. A special AI-based system allows you to significantly speed up this process.

Revolution in radiotherapy. New AI system created to precisely kill cancer cells

A team of specialists from Addenbrooke's Hospital led by Dr. Raj Jena worked with Microsoft to train the InnerEye program on data from previous patients. The laboratory of artificial intelligence of the National Health Service of Britain allocated £500 thousand (approximately $637 thousand at the exchange rate as of June 27, 2023) to carry out the necessary testing of the complex.

The new system will help UK doctors more effectively calculate where therapeutic radiation rays should be directed to kill cancer cells and keep as many healthy as possible. The results of the AI system are constantly monitored by specialists. But the researchers say that the program provides accuracy at about 90%, and clinicians approve of the results without any corrections in about two out of three cases. At the same time, it is noted that artificial intelligence is not able to replace highly qualified medical workers.[1]
