MADV Lockheed Martin

Product
Developers: Lockheed Martin
Branches: Space industry

In September 2017, at the International Astronautical Congress in Australian Adelaide, Lockheed Martin announced the MADV concept. The features of the ship will allow him to make a vertical landing on the surface of Mars. The principle of the MADV shuttle is somewhat similar to the Falcon-9 SpaceX launch vehicle concept, which has a reusable first stage. At the same time, the ship looks like the famous Space Shuttle decommissioned, although there are noticeable differences. It is also known that they want to use liquefied hydrogen as fuel for MADV, which can be mined directly on Mars[1].

They want to use the shuttle as a transport for the near-Martian orbital station Mars Base Camp, the project of which Lockheed Martin spoke about in the summer of 2016.

The base in orbit of the Red Planet should consist of several modules and be noticeably smaller than the ISS. The MADV ship became a kind of addition to the project: in theory, it will deliver cargo and colonists from the station to the Red Planet and vice versa. At the same time, there can be two MADV shuttles at once at the orbital station: one for performing current tasks, the other for insurance. Lockheed Martin wants to send the first astronauts to orbit Mars in 2028.
