2023: Growth of the Russian market volume to 3.5 trillion rubles

On June 26, 2024, it became known that the volume of the Russian credit card market at the end of 2023 reached 3.5 trillion rubles. This indicates a significant increase in this segment of banking services, despite difficult economic conditions and tightening regulatory requirements.

According to a study by Frank RG, the number of active credit cards in Russia in 2023 exceeded 50.5 million units. It is noted that the credit card segment has become the leader in the retail lending market in terms of the number of borrowers, reaching an indicator of 27.6 million people, which is 6.5 million more than in 2022.

The volume of the Russian credit card market in 2023 reached 3.5 trillion rubles

According to Frank RG, the share of the credit card market among the economically active population of Russia has grown markedly - from 26% to 38% of the working population. Banks emphasis is placed on credit cards because of their high returns due to credit turnover and higher interest rates. The leader in the credit card market in Russia at the end of 2023 was, Sberbank which increased its share by 5 percentage points and took 51% of the market. In second place is (former T-bank Tinkoff) with a share of 18%, increasing it by 1 percentage point. He took the third position Alfa-Bank with a share of 11%, slightly reducing his presence in the market.

One of the features of the credit card market in 2023 was the faster growth of credit limits compared to their disposal. Experts attribute this to the desire of banks to reserve a customer base for the future in anticipation of a possible limitation of the full cost of loans.

Frank RG analysts predict further growth in the credit card market. According to their estimates, by the end of 2024, the market volume may increase by 40% and reach 4.4 trillion rubles, and the number of active credit cards may grow to 60 million units.[1]

2022: Growth in card loans in September to 152 billion rubles

At the end of September 2022, Russian banks issued credit cards totaling 152.3 billion rubles, which is 0.3% more than in August.

Neither mortgages nor consumer loans can boast of such a pace, which, as can be seen from statistics, are inferior to other credit instruments, the report says.

According to the study, over the five years of issuing credit cards, they increased by 92% in quantitative terms and by 163% in monetary terms. The average limit on credit cards increased from 53 thousand rubles. in 2017 to 73 thousand rubles. in 2021.

At the same time, the share of the credit card limit used by the end of 2021 averaged 35%. The leaders in this indicator were the Republics of Tuva (47.1%), Ingushetia (44.4%) and Dagestan (41.8%). The top five also included Kabardino-Balkaria, where borrowers use their credit card limits by 39.8%, and Moscow - 39.7%.

According to the credit selection service "Credistory," in 2021 the number of clients with active credit cards increased sharply. The number of such borrowers without default increased by 20.5%, to 20.5 million, while in the first year of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the figure even decreased by 1%, and in 2019 it increased by only 9%.

The head of Equifax, Oleg Lagutkin, believes that credit cards have become a mass product partly due to an increase in the financial literacy of the population and the responsibility of Russians for their loan obligations. In addition, it affects the fact that banks are actively promoting this product through various sales channels, offering attractive conditions and bonus programs, he added.[2]

Growth of the average limit by 23% and debt over 90 days by 7.8%

The average limit on credit cards in December 2021 amounted to 82.7 thousand rubles, which is 23% more than a year earlier, and is a record in the entire history of observations, the Equifax credit bureau reported.

At the end of 2021, credit card holders had a total debt of more than 90 days of 156.8 billion rubles. This is 7.8% more than in 2020.

Sberbank, although it increased its portfolio by 2.5 billion rubles, lost 0.6% of the market amid the growth of key competitors.

A noticeable increase in the portfolio occurred at OTP Bank. It increased by 40% (+ 5.7 billion rubles) to 19.8 billion rubles.

As of 01.01.12, the top ten leaders in the credit card market look like this:

Sberbank, which has the largest banking network, came out on top in the fourth quarter of 2011, ahead of Russian Standard, a long-term leader and pioneer of the credit card market. Sberbank's portfolio grew by 148% to 63 billion rubles, showing the bank's interest in such a civilized instrument as credit cards.

Sberbank, however, was far from the only reason for the rise of the market, giving it less than 30% of the total growth. 73.7% were provided by other players. The Russian Standard, which for several years weakened its attention to the credit card market (from January 1, 2008 to January 1, 2011, the portfolio decreased from 88.3 to 49.5 billion rubles), began to grow again last year. Through credit cards, he issued an additional 9.8 billion rubles.

Judging by the pace gained, Sberbank will continue to break away from its pursuers, but the Russian Standard will retain second place in the market in the foreseeable future. The second state player after Sberbank, VTB24, last year did not reduce its lag behind the Russian Standard and is in third place with an indicator of 34.5 billion rubles (an increase of 9.7 billion rubles).

  • A sharp leap to fourth place was made by Vostochny Bank. He increased the portfolio of credit cards by 20 billion rubles to 23.1 billion rubles. The growth is due to the fact that the bank last year actively developed new products that it positioned for customers as cash loans, but used the credit card mechanism to issue and service them.

In 2011, TKS Bank increased its portfolio by 120% to RUB 21.2 billion. The top ten leaders included a new player - Svyaznoy Bank with an indicator of 12.1 billion rubles. From the top twenty, the portfolio of Citibank (by 13.4%) and MDM Bank (by 15.5%) was significantly reduced. One of the leaders of the past years, HKF Bank, increased its portfolio by 3 billion rubles and ranks sixth, focusing its efforts on other credit products.

In general, for 2012 we forecast the further growth of the credit card market by several tens of percent. Banks will try, when possible, to reorient the business from cash lending and store loans to credit cards, because this reduces costs and leads to a regular client who only needs to re-issue a credit card every 2-3 years.

2011

The Russian credit card market grew by 61.6% in 2011. The total debt of Russians on credit cards throughout the banking system increased by 140.2 billion rubles to the level of 367.8 billion rubles. Sberbank became the market leader for the first time.
