On March 21, 2014 the Fujitsu company announced delivery of the server hardware for creation of the supercomputer in the Data processing center of the Northern (Arctic) federal university of M.V. Lomonosov.
Project Tasks
The server hardware of Fujitsu became a basis for creation of the supercomputer in the Data processing center of the Northern (Arctic) federal university of M.V. Lomonosov.
As the initiator of purchase the department of programming and high-performance computing of institute of mathematics, information and the SAFU space technologies acted.
Project Results
Specialists of the company created a cluster as a part of twenty computing nodes (PRIMERGY servers), two servers of management, a data network and storage systems of ETERNUS DX. The newest architecture of the calculator is based on the Intel Xeon processors Phi. In addition to the hardware are implemented:
- graphical interface of management of a cluster
- parallel file system of data storage of FEFS (Fujitsu Exabyte File System),
developed by Fujitsu company.
During the project 12 computing nodes on the basis of the PRIMERGY CX250 S2 servers and eight nodes on the PRIMERGY CX270 S2 servers with the Intel Xeon processors E5-2680v2 (2.8 GHz) and RAM 64 GB are set.
On the PRIMERGY CX270 S2 servers eight Intel Xeon Phi 5110P coprocessors are installed.
Computing nodes are integrated in a uniform complex by the Infiniband switches and have access to storage systems of ETERNUS DX80 S2 via the PRIMERGY RX300 servers. Two PRIMERGY RX300 servers manage a cluster.
Cluster performance on CPU:
- peak 8.96 TFLOPS (Tflops),
- maximum on the LINPACK 8.02 TFLOPS test;
on CPU+Xeon Phi:
- peak 11.68 TFLOPS,
- maximum - 7.68 TFLOPS.
For March 21, 2014 there is an active work with institutes of SAFU on training in work at the supercomputer.
Denis Makashov, the head of the regional office in the Northwestern Federal District, Fujitsu, noted: "The Fujitsu company was and remains one of leaders among the companies making high-performance computing systems. We have rich, both a Russian, and foreign experience in creation of the similar systems. When choosing the supplier of components for creation of the supercomputer, the management of SAFU showed high criteria to their power and reliability to create the tool capable to execute the calculations necessary for scientific research. The computing cluster created on the basis of server solutions of Fujitsu will allow the university to expand the opportunities in training of high quality IT specialists, and will also create conditions for carrying out difficult scientific researches which implementation was impossible without the computing powers provided by the supercomputer. The Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers, being united in a serious computing cluster, are capable to solve applied problems from the field of such fundamental sciences as mathematics, information science and space technologies. Now all ways to achievement of success in scientific activity are open for the university".
Appearance of the calculator at the university increases prestige of organization. The supercomputer constructed on the basis of solutions of Fujitsu will help the university with carrying out scientific research in the field of applied mathematics, information and space technologies and will allow to develop the profound mathematical models more precisely describing objects of the real world.
