LUL used Bentley technologies for repair of a tunnel of the subway

On December 21, 2015 it became known of the project of laying of a tunnel on 215-meter section of the Anniversary line of London Underground Limited company, using technologies of Bentley company for 3D - visualization and animation, 4D-planning, 3D - printings and creations of virtual reality.

Project Task

Before the management of London Underground Limited (LUL) there was a problem of creation of the project of repair of a tunnel which would not violate the daily message of trains on the Anniversary line (Jubilee Line) of the subway.

Project Progress

Using software Bentley MicroStation ProjectWise AECOsim Building Designer, Bentley Navigator, Descartes, Bentley Pointools View, repair of a railway line, recovery work in a tunnel on 215-meter section of the Anniversary line are carried out. At the same time the line continued to function in the normal mode.

London subway (2013)

Operating time in a tunnel was limited for 2.5 hours at night. London Underground Limited gathered a team and used its potential. By means of ProjectWise software the general environment of data and workflows are defined according to the British standard 1192 and it provided a uniform reliable source for all data in the project, helped London Underground Limited company to execute the project for four months of earlier stated term.

LUL managed to implement a number of innovations:

  • completely scanned on laser 3D - the scanner the model of an object and infrastructure helped to create a 3D model, eliminating need for additional checks and observations of an object.
  • saving of time up to 15-20 percent is reached by a set of the processes connected with the design and check begun at start of project lifecycle that led to creation of the approved project solution and the project plan at early stages of project implementation.
  • the design quality evaluation, 4D-planning and other steps directed to assessment of project model allowed to reduce terms of works as much as possible. For example, by input of two segment sinking boards the command could align a tunnel since both ends that increased performance twice and helped to complete the project for four months earlier, than it was planned initially.
