2024: Global MRI Machine Market Size Reaches $7.6 Billion for the Year

In 2024, costs in the global market for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices amounted to about $7.6 billion. Almost 42% of this amount fell on the North American region. Such data are presented in a study by Research And Markets, the results of which TAdviser got acquainted with in early May 2025.

MRI systems are widely used in modern healthcare due to their numerous advantages over other types of diagnostic equipment. In particular, during MRI scans, ionizing radiation, which underlies X-rays, is not used. During MRI screening, the doctor receives images of the organ of interest in several planes and projections, which allows you to study the tissues in detail, taking into account the anatomical characteristics of the patient. Thanks to modern MRI equipment, it is possible to form images with high detail - this increases the accuracy of diagnostics.

In general, as noted, MRI is one of the most effective and informative methods for diagnosing diseases of internal organs. With the help of such devices, examination of the brain and spinal cord, organs of the abdominal cavity and pelvis, vascular system, joints, spine, etc., can be carried out. At the same time, there are contraindications: they include the presence of a pacemaker and metal implants, the first trimester of pregnancy and epilepsy.

One of the drivers of the market for MRI devices, analysts call the aging of the population in combination with the growing prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular ailments, malignant, formations neurological disorders, etc. Accurate diagnosis and tracking of such conditions requires effective imaging tools. Technological advances, including the introduction of artificial intelligence, are having a positive impact on the industry. AI-based systems are able to analyze medical images with great accuracy, minimizing errors associated with the human factor. AI helps in the formation of personalized treatment regimens based on the individual characteristics of the patient and his condition.

Structurally, the market is segmented into closed and open MRI machines. Devices of the first type provided the lion's share of revenue in 2024 - 71.8%. Such devices provide higher image quality, as well as allow for more accurate research in specific areas. In turn, open-type installations offer more comfortable conditions for the patient during the study and easy access for medical personnel; in addition, they are suitable for people with severe forms of claustrophobia. From a geographical point of view, North America leads, which in 2024 accounted for 41.9% of sales - $3.18 billion. Meanwhile, the Asia-Pacific region is experiencing the fastest growth rate. Globally, significant players are named:

Analysts at Research And Markets believe that in the future, the CAGR in the market under consideration will be about 6%. As a result, by 2030, sales of MRI devices worldwide could increase to $10.8 billion.[1]

2023: Global sales of open-type MRI scanners reach $1.6 billion in a year

At the end of 2023, sales of open-type magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices on a global scale reached $1.6 billion. The market is experiencing steady growth, driven by increasing demand for diagnostic imaging. This is stated in a study by Market Research Future, the results of which were released in mid-July 2024.

Open-type MRI scanners are special systems designed to conduct research without a tunnel capsule. Such devices provide more free space around the patient, thereby eliminating the feeling of cramped and closed. This is important for people with claustrophobia or limited mobility. The advantages of open-design equipment include versatility (used in a wide range of clinical trials), convenience (allows for examinations of patients of any build) and easy access of medical personnel.

Key market players include Hitachi Healthcare Americas,, Siemens Healthineers,, GE Healthcare Philips Healthcare Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation,,, Esaote S.p.A. Aspect Imaging Fonar Corporation, Paramed Medical Systems, Neusoft Medical Systems. From a geographical point of view, in 2023, North America became the largest sales region for open-type MRI scanners: it accounted for $0.7 billion, or about 44% of total sales. The Europe Asia-Pacific region, where the highest growth rates are observed, is in second place, and closes the top three.

Market Research Future analysts believe that in 2024 the costs in the area under consideration will rise to $1.7 billion. In the future, the CAGR (compound percentage CAGR) is expected to be 6%. As a result, by 2032, the global market for open-type MRI scanners could reach approximately $2.6 billion.[2]

2015: Volume of $5.4 billion

In early May 2016, the analytical company P&S Market Research published the results of a study of the global market for equipment for conducting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures. He was predicted to grow steadily for several years.

P&S Market Research calculated that in 2015, sales of MRI devices on a global scale amounted to $5.4 billion. In the period from 2016 to 2022, this market will grow annually by an average of 5%, experts predict.

According to them, an increase in demand for MRI equipment is facilitated by an increase in the number of elderly people, an increase in health care costs, the wide prevalence of chronic diseases and an improvement in medical infrastructure in developing countries.

The global market for MRI devices amounted to $5.4 billion in 2015

Analysts include strict regulatory requirements for the certification of devices, the high cost of such equipment, the lack of qualified specialists and the lack of deposits of helium gas, which is used to refuel MRI, among the factors restraining the development of the market for MRI examinations.

The largest market for devices for magnetic resonance imaging procedures in 2015 was North America, however, in the period from 2016 to 2022, the Asia-Pacific region will show the greatest growth in sales of this equipment (by 5.8% per year), the study notes.

As for market segments, analysts predict the highest dynamics for open-type MRI scanners. Their sales in 2016-2022 will increase by an average of 7.8% annually.

Open MRI tomographs are designed to examine patients with claustrophobia and with too much body weight. In addition, such equipment is suitable for examining children in the presence of adults.[3]
