FIPS completed upgrade of a translation platform of texts

On July 21, 2016 the PROMT company announced an implementation project of PROMT Translation Server technology in the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIIP).

Project Tasks

FIPS accepts and processes within a year more than 50 thousand patent requests, including international which need to be checked for similarity with already existing in other countries to register an innovation or an invention^[1].

Experts of institute conduct search in bases from more than 110 million documents, and each specialist should browse daily the large volume of information in the European languages to take out an expert opinion. System operation which executes automatic translation from several languages promotes optimization of work of all department and directly influences the speed of consideration of requests.

Action of FIPS, (2014)

The main objective within the project - creation of a multifunction scalable translation platform for automation of translation of texts and documents of graphic formats and requests in search international systems. For July 21, 2016 the platform provides the translation of the patent document or its fragment from the English, German, French, Italian and Spanish languages into Russian.

As a basis for a translation platform of FIPS took a flagship product of PROMT Translation Server which is improved and complemented with functionality according to customer requirements. In it it is possible to work, as through user the interface (including via popular web browsers), and via the program interface implemented as cross-platform web service.

Feature of work with FIPS - complete implementation of all opportunities put in products of the PROMT Translation Server series:

• translation of the text;
• the translation of documents with preservation of formatting;
• the translation of the documents saved in the form of a graphic image;
• term base and search in it;
• setup of translation quality;
• the special transfer of requests considering structure and rules of creation of a request in the search system;
• transfer using the user interface and through API;
• flexible authorization (anonymous and personified).

In the upgraded version, to the translation of text files the feature for translation of graphic files (JPG, PDF) which often meet in work of experts of FIPS is added. The program automatically translates from Russian keyword query from the expert to the search system PatSearch for a search capability of relevant information in bases of patents in different languages.

For ensuring required translation quality the intellectual hybrid technology of automatic translation is implemented, it does automatic translation by more "smooth" and stylistically correct, considering specific lexicon of experts of department. This technology - synthesis of traditional translation on the basis of the grammatical description of a natural language (RBMT) and automatic editing the got automatic translation using the analysis of statistical models.

Modules for statistical postediting are created on the basis of the professional Russian-English translations provided to FIPS.

Project Progress

The implemented version of PROMT Translation Server developed for FIPS gives additional opportunities:

• the module of an electronic dictionary on the basis of specialized dictionary base PROMT and the FIPS dictionaries,
• module of recognition of graphic files,
• the modified authentication system
• a number of settings for convenience of manipulations with a translation platform.

Project Results

Upgrade of a product helped FIPS to optimize work of patent experts during the work with multilingual information.

FIPS was one of the organizations which realized efficiency of deployment of the centralized solution and for needs of the end user and for embedding in other information systems of the organization. Thanks to the fact that FIPS provided big arrays of parallel data (original patents and their transfers) it was succeeded to apply technology of hybrid transfer, having proved its efficiency for fast setup 'under the user' and receiving qualitative translation when at the organization many documents and their transfers collected. Practice of our long-term cooperation with PROMT company validated our initial decision on the choice of the partner for solving of tasks of machine translation of texts of patent documents. Thanks to high quality of transfer of PROMT we even now when free means of machine translation are widely available, do not ask about failure from services of our partners. The company always quickly responded to our wishes, sometimes works, specific to technology, in FIPS. It concerned both creation of the hybrid translation system of patent documents, and special functionality on transfer of requests for search in English-language databases, and automatic connection of dictionaries taking into account subject of documents.
