2022: Global CT scanner sales exceed $6 billion
At the end of 2022, global sales of computed tomography (CT) equipment exceeded $6 billion. This is stated in a study by Signify Research, the results of which were released on August 2, 2023.
The report notes that the growth rate of sales of CT scanners has decreased compared to the indicators observed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is explained by several reasons, including the current geopolitical situation, high inflation and macroeconomic challenges. In addition, ongoing trade tensions between China and the United States are having a negative impact on the industry. All this leads to the fact that medical institutions postpone the purchase of new equipment.
On the other hand, analysts highlight a number of stimulating factors. In particular, the growth of the market is facilitated by the growing demand for modern diagnostic imaging tools in emerging markets. The increase in sales is also facilitated by the emergence of new medical complexes with artificial intelligence technologies that help to increase the efficiency of workflows and improve the accuracy of results. The introduction of automation means allows medical institutions to increase the number of patients served.
The development of health systems worldwide, including the expansion of primary health care and digital infrastructure, is among the major growth drivers of the computed tomography market, the study said. |
Signify Research believes that in the period from 2022 to 2027, the average annual growth rate in complex percentages (CAGR) in the global CT equipment market will be 6.7%. Cost increases are expected in all key regions. At the same time, China can significantly strengthen its position by expanding its global presence.[1]
2017: CT scanner sales to reach $4.83 billion
Global sales of scanner-computer tomography (CT) in 2017 will amount to $4.83 billion. This forecast was made in December 2017 by analysts at Transparency Market Research (TMR).
Experts are optimistic about the future of the global CT scanner market and predict that demand for CT systems from 2017 to 2022 will grow by an average of 5.9% per year, and by the end of the period revenue will reach $6.43 billion.[2]
Speaking about certain market segments, experts noted the most pronounced demand for O-ARM CT imaging systems, whose sales in 2017 are estimated at $3.39 billion, which corresponds to 70.2% of the projected general market result.
It is expected that in the six-year period under review, upward dynamics will continue in this direction: O-ARM sales on average will grow by 6% per year, and by 2022 their volume in monetary terms will reach $4.53 billion. Experts also added that the O-ARM segment demonstrates the highest absolute growth among other categories of the CT equipment market: on average, revenue from 2017 to 2022 will increase by $227.6 million per year.
Geographically, the largest contributor to revenue in the CT scanner market is North America. According to TMR estimates, in 2022 over $1.84 billion will be spent on the purchase of CT systems in this region.
Characterizing the competitive environment, experts noted moderate consolidation in the market, adding that most key players focused on the development of distribution channels through cooperation.
Among the leading market participants, TMR experts listed the following companies (in alphabetical order):
- Accuray
- Carestream Health
- GE Healthcare
- Hitachi
- Koning
- Philips
- Medtronic
- Neusoft
- Planmed
- Samsung Electronics
- Shenzhen Anke High-Tech

Sales of $4.7 billion - Global Market Insights
In April 2018, the analytical company Global Market Insights published some results of a study of computed tomography (CT) equipment.
In 2016, sales of CT scanners amounted to $4.7 billion. By 2024, the figure will exceed $7 billion, experts predict.
According to them, the demand for CT machines is increasing due to a number of reasons, including the growing spread of chronic diseases (including cardiovascular and oncological) and an increase in demand for minimally invasive diagnostic tools.
Among the barriers to the growth of the CT scanner market, analysts include the widespread use of repaired equipment, the high cost of new systems and the risk of radiation exposure.
Most of the sales of computed tomography equipment in 2016 came from stationary models. They are widely used in large hospitals and institutes that conduct a large number of patient scans each month.
At the same time, mobile devices are gaining popularity due to their high deployment speed and ability to solve transportation problems, according to a report by Global Market Insights.
As for the architecture of scanners, the lion's market share in 2016 was occupied by devices with O-arcs. They are expected to remain more in demand compared to C-arc equipment until 2024. This is due to the use of the former in a wider range of procedures, such as spinal cord surgery.[3]

Market size of $4.9 billion - Kalorama Information data
On January 17, 2017, the analytical company Kalorama Information announced some results of a study of the global market for scanners for computed tomography. Sales of this equipment on a global scale amounted to $4.9 billion in 2016.
Experts did not specify the dynamics of the market volume change, but reported that there is an increase caused by factors such as an increase in the number of clinical studies using CT devices, an increase in the share of the age population, which is more in need of medical diagnosis, as well as an increase in the spread of chronic diseases.
Among all medical imaging systems, CT scanners are expected to be the fastest growing piece of equipment, says Kalorama Information analyst Bruce Carlson. - The technological advances of the last decade have made it possible to achieve very high image quality in a short time. |
Thanks to the rapid development of computed tomography, it was also possible to significantly reduce the number of false positive research results, increase the importance of CT for patients with advanced prostate cancer, reduce potentially harmful radiation and reduce the number of necessary CT examinations of children, the study says.
According to experts, the healthcare market will be filled with portable CT devices due to the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment. In particular, there is a growing need for portable head scanners in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with craniocerebral pathology. Compact CT equipment will become the standard of medical care within 10 years, Kalorama Information is confident.
