Request for frequencies for medical equipment in Russia

Siemens Healthineers asked for frequencies for medical equipment in Russia, which became known in mid-December 2022. The company asked the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (SCRF) to include a 23.6 MHz band in the list of bands for high-frequency devices.

German medical In the equipment requested by the manufacturer, frequency band in any case, very close ranges, there are, for example, devices for physiotherapy, a To news source familiar with several developers of medical equipment said. According to the interlocutor, equipment at frequencies of 23.6 MHz can be used for point treatment of malignant tumors, and in this case, radiation is combined with the introduction of special drugs.

In order to use such devices in Russia at these frequencies, permission from the authorities is necessary, because the equipment of hospitals and clinics can interfere with other equipment. According to experts, some fixed and mobile communication devices operate in ranges close to 23 MHz. In the future, analysts believe that if the required frequency is included in the list of bands for high-frequency devices, this can simplify the import of this equipment into the country.

Siemens Healthineers continues to operate in Russia, despite the departure of Siemens from the country. The reluctance of Siemens Healthineers to curtail the Russian business is understandable: the loss of the client base and the reduction in sales is painful for any company, said TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov. In addition, it would be unethical for Siemens as a company with a significant share of the medical equipment market to leave the market without ensuring its support and renewal, he said.

According to the head of the Content-Review project, Sergei Polovnikov, the fact that Siemens has applied for frequencies may indicate the company's plans for a long-term presence in Russia.[1]

Continued work in Russia despite the departure of Siemens

As it became known on May 12, 2022, Siemens Healthineers will continue to work in the Russian market despite the departure of Siemens, which owns a controlling stake in the manufacturer of medical devices (while Siemens Healthineers is an independent public company).

As previously reported, we at Siemens Healthineers continue to provide the best possible support to our customers and their patients in Russia. We do this in strict accordance with the law. The current sanctions are not aimed directly at the health sector, since access to medical care is one of the basic human rights, Siemens Healthineers said in a statement (quoted by TASS). }}

On May 12, 2022, Siemens President and CEO Roland Bush announced the start of an "orderly process of curtailing industrial operations in Russia." He also concluded that the decision "does not address the humanitarian-oriented aspects of healthcare of Siemens Healthineers, which is also a separately registered company."

Against the background of the Russian special operation in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions, several foreign manufacturers of medical devices reported a halt in the supply of products to the Russian Federation. According to Igor Korobko, Director of the Department of Science and Innovative Health Development of the Ministry of Health, problems can begin with the presence of endoprostheses and their components, which are used in traumatology-orthopedics, with catheters and consumables for cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery, devices, tools, components and consumables for endosurgery, anesthesiology-resuscitation, transplantology and dialysis.

They plan to solve the problem collectively: back in March 2022, the Ministry of Health created 20 working groups in various fields of medicine, which include the main freelance specialists of the Ministry of Health, representatives of Roszdravnadzor, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and experts from the National Institute of Quality.[2]
