2018: Demonstration of the pilotless motorcycle
In September, 2018 the German carmaker BMW provided the first pilotless motorcycle. The ConnectedRide model constructed based on a tourist enduro is capable to begin with BMW R1200GS independently the movement, to undergo turns and to stop, landing on a side footboard.
By the time of the announcement of the motorcycle it was used for testing of the systems of active security for the two-wheeled equipment. During testing of BMW R1200GS with an auto pilot necessary data on behavior of the motorcycle in critical situations were collected. The car maker considers that information obtained during tests will be used for creation of the electronic assistants increasing security during the trips on the motorcycle.
The prototype will help us to expand knowledge of dynamics of the car that we could classify behavior of the racer and predict, this or that situation constitutes danger or not. If this is so, we can warn the driver or interfere directly — the employee of motorcycle division of BMW Stefan Hans said. |
The company does not open what set of sensors it used for tracking of a road situation, however on video it is possible to see that engineers did not begin to apply lidars which are used in the majority of prototypes of unmanned vehicles.
BMWs not the only company which are engaged in development of the two-wheeled vehicles capable to go without person. 2015 Yamaha provided the robot capable to manage the 200-strong YZF-R1M sport bike. It was supposed that Motobot will compete as equals to real racers, "controlling difficult movements of the motorcycle and its management system at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour". And here development of Honda under the name Riding Assist is capable to maintain balance of the motorcycle, turning a wheel in the necessary direction and also allows the bike to follow the owner independently.[1]
