2019: Activation in Moscow networks on the basis of NB-IoT technology
On July 2, 2019 it became known that PJSC VimpelCom (a brand Beeline) activated in Moscow network for services and devices of Internet of Things (IoT) in the LTE standard on the basis of NB-IoT technology. It will be able to support tens of millions of smart devices. In the long term can pass city and consumer services, such as systems of accounting of energy resources, city illumination, road infrastructure and intelligent systems of housing and public utilities to this standard.
Earlier test platform of the operator in the capital for developers of solutions of Internet of Things on NB-IoT network acted only on the territory of the smart quarter in Maryino.
Mass activation of the NB-IoT standard on our base stations became the next step of upgrade of the Moscow network of Beeline. The trend on mass integration of products of Internet of Things only gains steam in the Russian market therefore we consider correct to give the chance to developers to carry out pilots of the IoT-solutions on our network in Moscow. In the short term we expect transition to the specified standard of many city and consumer services, such as systems of accounting of energy resources, city illumination, road infrastructure and intelligent systems of housing and public utilities", |
Activation of the NB-IoT standard creates technology conditions for strengthening of positions of Moscow as smart city. Product introduction based on this standard will allow residents of the capital to receive high-quality services in everyday life, |
Besides, Beeline provided hybrid network LTE which supports two key mobile standards of technologies of Internet of Things at once - NB-IoT in Moscow and LTE Cat-M. Support of two technologies expands possibilities of network for connection of services and devices of Internet of Things of different functionality, including allows to service moving objects and also objects in buildings and underground constructions. The hybrid network is already activated in the territory of the innovation center "Skolkovo", the smart quarter in Maryino and in Voikovsky district.
In May, 2019 Beeline announced large-scale upgrade of infrastructure of network in Moscow for all history of the company. Beeline is going to put into operation in Moscow a 5G-ready communication network in 2020. The first phase of upgrade including updating of a communication network in all districts of Moscow including in the Central Administrative District, will come to the end by September, 2019. Speed of the mobile Internet will increase three times, and the capacity of network considerably will grow. Upon completion of upgrade of network the covering of the NB-IoT standard will extend - due to activation of additional base stations in Moscow[1].
2018: The agreement on development of communication services in the capital
On December 17, 2018 VimpelCom signed with the Government of Moscow the agreement on joint development of communication services of information telecommunication technologies in the capital. The project calculated on five years among other things assumes implementation of technologies of the "smart" city.
According to terms of the contract, VimpelCom with assistance of the Government of Moscow will be engaged in implementation of pilot projects in the field of virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things and the concept of the "smart" city. In particular, the operator in the pilot mode will unroll 5G network in Moscow in 2019 and also will provide permanent commercial a 5G cluster with technical and legal capability, reported in the press release.
Within the direction the "smart" city VimpelCom will unroll NB-IoT technologies (Narrow Band Internet of Things) in all territory of the capital that will allow to start IoT-technologies, for example, in housing sectors, logistics, city video surveillance. From Moscow the Department of Information Technologies (DIT) will be responsible for implementation of the agreement.
The announced agreement also provides formation of research competences, technical and legal expertize in the field of use and implementation of new technologies, including due to involvement of students of the Moscow higher education institutions for participation in joint pilot projects of VimpelCom and authorities of the capital.
Earlier VimpelCom provided the Russia's first hybrid section of LTE network which supports in addition to the classical mobile standard of technologies of Internet of Things NB-IoT, the standard with high mobility — LTE Cat-M. Besides, the test platform for developers of solutions of Internet of Things on network of the NB-IoT standard is provided in the territory of "The smart quarter" in the Moscow region of Maryino.
