2019: UAE spied on foreign politicians with iPhone program

At the end of January 2019, it became known that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) spied on foreign diplomas and officials using a mobile application called Karma, developed by former US intelligence officials.

According to Reuters news agency, citing its own informants and documentation for Karma, the program allowed access to the iPhone remotely when uploading a phone number or email account to an automated system.

Back in 2016, there was a Karma tool that allows you to remotely access any iPhone

The development exploited a vulnerability in Apple's iMessage instant messaging system and was not used to hack Android devices.

A vulnerability in the iPhone allowed malicious software to be injected even if the owner of the device did not use iMessage. To do this, you just had to send a text message to the device. No action was required on the part of the recipient.

Karma was used by the offensive cyber operations unit in Abu Dhabi, which included emirate security personnel and former US National Security Agency (NSA) employees who worked as contractors for the UAE intelligence services.

Reuters knows that surveillance using the Karma application was carried out on the emir of Qatar, senior Turkish officials, human rights activists of Yemen, etc.

The publication mentions one name - Lori Stroud, an employee of the US NSA until 2014. She quit Project Raven in 2016 when she learned that Karma had started spying on   US citizens as well.

By early January 2019 , it is not known whether UAE specialists continue to use Karma or not, since at the end of 2017, Apple's security updates made the tool much less effective.[1]

On January 17, 2022, the capital of the United Arab Emirates was attacked with unmanned aerial vehicles. The targets of the attack were three fuel trucks that were destroyed, in addition, a fire broke out at a construction site near Abu Dhabi airport, local police said.

About 20 drones and 10 ballistic missiles attacked the territory of the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, an attack killed three people, one Pakistani and two Indian nationals, and injured six others. The UAE has vowed to retaliate after a drone attack, for which Yemeni rebels from the Houthi movement claimed responsibility, saw the Shia Muslim movement, whose supporters profess the Zeidite madhhab. The UAE is part of a Saudi-led military coalition that supports the Yemeni government against Iranian rebels of the Houthi movement who have repeatedly attacked the UAE across the border.
