Standards for unmanned vehicles
2019: A statement and canceling of the standard in Europe
In the middle of April, 2019 the European Parliament approved the standard for wireless interaction of cars. Most of members (304 against 207) voted for ITS-G5 technology which cornerstone Wi-Fi is. In a counterbalance were put by a 5G network.
The European Commission considered Wi-Fi preferable technology as it is already available (unlike a 5G), more than 12 years it is tested by car makers (therefore it is checked) and it enough for transfer of small data packets between cars (for example, for transfer of warning of dangerous section on a route).
Critics of this point of view say that the requirement of compatibility with low technologies is unrealistic and will slow down development of an innovation.
We are convinced that use of WiFi technology will lead to considerable delays in the European deployment of communications between cars and cars in infrastructure — the CEO of BMW Harald Krueger and the CEO of Deutsche Telekom Timotheus Hettges in the joint letter said to the Minister of Transport of Germany. |
Supporters of ITS-G5 among whom Renault, Toyota, NXP, Autotalks and Kapsch TrafficCom, stake on interaction of cars among themselves. In turn, the companies which would like to see a 5G as a basis for wireless communication in machines want that interaction happened not only between vehicles, but also to road infrastructure and surrounding devices, expanding a scope on entertainments, data on traffic and navigation.
The companies selecting Wi-Fi say that standardization and deployment of technology on the basis of a 5G can take years. Opponents are sure that process will take place much quicker, and note that the 5G communication provides almost zero delay in data transmission that is crucial for development of unmanned vehicles.
Anyway, the European Parliament supported ITS-G5 and approved the set of rules which will help with distribution of the standard.[1]
The European Commission prefers to prevent fragmentary deployment of two different V2V communications and consequently, gave preference 'to the technology of 802.11 p operating" which creates radio the standard within C-ITS is called ITS-G5.
In July, 2019 the EU rejected the recommendation of European Commission according to which Wi-Fi-based (802.11 p) ITS-G5 standard should be approved as the requirement to V2X opportunities. 21 of 28 Voted EU member states, including three main automobile markets (France, Germany and Italy) against the offer of the European Commission.
