TMeter is the finished means for the organization of shared access in the Internet comprising such mechanisms as a firewall, NAT, DNS, traffic a sheyper (restriction of speed).
Version 10.0 of the TMeter program contains the next new opportunities. Among them - a possibility of accounting of traffic on a user name the terminal server. It is no secret that recently corporate networks widely apply services of terminals to cost reduction. Owing to feature of technology of services of terminals, accounting of traffic on boundary gateways cannot be implemented without additional resources of authentication of users. TMeter 10.0 "is transparent" solves a problem of accounting of traffic and users do not feel any discomfort with Internet connection.
Other innovation of TMeter 10.0 - a possibility of accounting of traffic according to applications (processes). Now using TMeter, it is possible to define absolutely precisely how many "consumes", for example, Skype application or a torrent client. Moreover, it is possible not only to consider traffic of applications, but also to limit. For example, it is possible to permit Internet access only to the Mozilla Firefox browser that will reduce risk of date leak stored on your computer. It is possible to tell that lines of a personal firewall became inherent in the TMeter program, and the free editorial office (Freeware) allows to use fully TMeter in this quality.
The program extends in free edition (Freeware) allowing use no more than three filters for accounting of traffic and in the commercial editorial offices (Standard, Business and Premium) available for the mezzanine board. Pricing of commercial versions of TMeter is based depending on the maximum number of available filters, their difference from the free version - only among filters.
Introduction
TMeter is the program for Microsoft Windows which main objective is calculation of network traffic. Is also a complex Internet gateway and includes the following main features: firewall NAT DNS traffic-sheyper (restriction of speed of traffic), URL filtering. Serves for distribution, accounting and access control in the Internet at the enterprises, in private and provider networks. Program management is exercised via the graphical interface.
Description
The principle of work consists in interception of all network packets by service TMeter (by means of the special driver of collecting of packets tmeter.sys) which go from the network adapter to a stack of TCP/IP Microsoft Windows (MSTCP) and vice versa - from MSTCP in the network adapter. Thus, each network packet with guarantee comes on processing to TMeter program filter set. In addition to capture of traffic from network adapters of the local computer, TMeter supports collecting of traffic from remote routers under the CISCO Netflow v.5 protocol. Filter set (the list of filters) - the key concept of TMeter containing in itself logic processing of network packets.
TMeter filter
The TMeter filter is the module including the following components:
- Rule set. Operation at least of one rule in the filter leads to operation of the filter in general
- Two 64-bit counters of the sent and accepted bytes
- Traffic a sheyper giving opportunity of restriction of speed of the packets which got to the filter
- Collector of packets by means of which it is possible to receive the aggregated log file of the network packets which got to the filter
- The collector of requests of web requests (HTTP) for creation of the list of the URL addresses on the basis of the network packets which got to the filter
- Settings of a limit of traffic after which exceeding blocking of traffic or restriction of speed is possible
- Schedule of operation of the filter
- Settings of zeroing of counters
Creation of reports on traffic
By default, TMeter creates reports on traffic in the file of the XML format. Reports in the XML format can be looked as by means of the special program which is included in TMeter package and by means of the normal Internet browser supporting XSLT formatting. Besides, is available perhaps to configure record of counters in almost any database via the ADO mechanism.
Firewall
The principle of work of the built-in firewall consists in blocking of the TCP and UDP connections which initiator is not the host protected by the TMeter program. At the same time perhaps creations of the list of exceptions which will permit incoming connections from the outside.
NAT
The NAT mechanism which is built in TMeter allows to provide Internet access to other computers of a local network through the only external IP address. Sale of the NAT mechanism in TMeter allowed to solve one of important tasks - accounting of "net" traffic of the NAT router (i.e. without traffic of clients from a local network). Thus, if at the computer gateway on which TMeter is set and which considers Internet traffic for all home or office network the separate workplace is organized, then the possibility of accounting of Internet traffic of this workplace using one filter appeared now. The NAT mechanism in TMeter does not require the special addresses for the local network hidden for NAT (unlike implementation of NAT in the Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista operating systems in which the internal interface should have surely address 192.168.0.1).
Content filtering
TMeter comprises a possibility of URL Filtering (URL Filtering) allowing to create "black" and "white" (but as the sozdatbely list it is not written anywhere) lists of the URL addresses and also parts of the URL addresses (for example, to limit access to *.avi, *.mp3, *.exe resources, etc.). At the same time, URL filtering can be applied as to all filters (the concept "TMeter Filter" of which it was talked above means) at once, and in selective filters.
Authentication of users
In the environment where the IP addresses are appointed dynamically through DHCP or there is a big risk of substitution of the static IP addresses, it is possible to apply authentication of users. At the same time the list of users needs to be created previously in TMeter Management console, and to install on each client computer the "easy" Agent Avtorizatsii of TMeter. Such scheme will allow to consider traffic or to control Internet access on a user name that will allow to reduce threat of emergence of the troubles connected with change of the IP addresses at users. If to the user the limit of traffic is set, at its exceeding the Agent Avtorizatsii will inform him the corresponding message. Two authentication modes of users - own mode or the Active Directory mode are supported.
Accounting of traffic of users Windows terminal server
Accounting of traffic of users the terminal server has certain difficulties as all users go on-line under the only IP address and in a packet header of IP there is no information on to what user it belongs. TMeter proposes here effective solution which allows to solve the specified problems. However it is necessary that the TMeter program was installed directly on the terminal server.
Accounting of traffic according to applications (processes)
TMeter includes a possibility of accounting of traffic according to applications (processes). Using TMeter, it is possible to define absolutely precisely how many "consumes", for example, Skype application or a torrent client. Moreover, it is possible not only to consider traffic of applications, but also to limit. For example, it is possible to permit Internet access only to the Mozilla Firefox browser that will reduce risk of date leak stored on your computer.
