2020: Taiwan sold a 5G frequency
In the middle of January, 2020 Taiwan ended an auction for sale of a 5G frequencies after 261 rounds of biddings. According to the declaration of the National commission on communication (NCC), the total cost of requests was 138.08 billion Taiwan dollars ($4.6 billion).
Four telecommunication companies — Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Taiwan Star Telecom — won tenders for providing a certain share of frequencies in the most popular band (3.5 GHz). Asia Pacific Telecom did not win a victory in this group, but managed to redeem frequencies in other, less popular bandwidth. The unit price of the frequencies of 10 MHz in the bandwidth of 3.5 GHz reached $5.075 billion Taiwan dollars. Thus, these frequencies became the most expensive bandwidth of a 5G frequencies in the world.
Chunghwa Telecom won tenders for 90 MHz of frequencies in a band of 3.5 GHz for 45.675 billion Taiwan dollars and also 600 MHz in a band of 28 GHz for 618 million Taiwan dollars. FET spent 40.6 billion Taiwan dollars for 80 MHz in a band of 3.5 GHz and 412 million Taiwan dollars on 400 MHz in a band of 28 GHz. Taiwan Mobile took 60 MHz in a band 3.5 GHz for 30.4 billion and 200 MHz in a band of 28 GHz for 206 million Taiwan Star Telecom won tenders for 40 MHz in a band of 3.5 GHz for 19.708 billion, and Asia Pacific Telecom provided 40 MHz in a band 28 GHz for 412 million.
It is expected that Chunghwa Telecom and FET, having provided the frequency of 90 MHz and 80 MHz in a band of 3.5 GHz respectively, will actively compete in a number of 5G services segments, including IoT, AI and Big Data. Judging by the current business model of Taiwan Mobile, the company will probably integrate with Asia Pacific Telecom for providing the corresponding 5G services, using the frequency of 60 MHz which she received 3.5 GHz in a band.[1]
