Robots began to sort various goods not worse than people

Customers: Knapp

Mechanical engineering and instrument making

Contractors: Covariant

Project date: 2020/01

At the end of January, 2020 the startup of Covariant provided the robotic manipulator capable it is not worse to sort various goods people. The first this equipment was implemented by the Knapp company specializing in technologies of warehouse logistics.

In 2018 Knapp began to look for the new robotic manipulator with artificial intelligence which could sort as much as possible types of objects. The company sent to startups lists of objects, harder and harder for recognition, which covered a number of products from clients of Knapp. In turn commands of startups sent to the customer of video with the robotic manipulator which moved these objects from one basket to another. But only the Covariant manipulator managed to cope with all assigned tasks.

Algorithms Covariant are already used by manipulators in two warehouses of clients of Knapp. One of them managed by the German supplier of Obeta electric equipment is completely put in production since September, 2019. Cofounders say that Covariant will conclude at least one more bargain soon.

Earlier robotized systems with AI were characterized by high restrictions, but Covariant was probably succeeded to close this gap. Developers claim that their system is capable to cope with the most difficult tasks of the real world.

In warehouses there are two categories of tasks: movement in space and collecting/placement of objects in the right place. Robots participate in warehouse work for a long time, but usually their tasks were limited to automation of the first work type. Automation of movements of hands is much more difficult, the technology should adapt quickly to a wide variety of forms and the sizes of products with permanent change of position in space. If the Covariant manipulator pass operational testings, it is quite capable to change warehouse logistics forever.[1]
