"The foundation of the Central Scientific Library is unique, it has rare regional scientific publications, their gradual careful digitization will not only save a paper source for future generations of Far Eastern scientists, but also provide an opportunity to familiarize themselves with their digital copy," commented by Natalya Evgenievna Zhuravskaya |
2020: Equipped with Elar scanners
On March 12, 2020, Elar announced that with the help of ElarSKAN and ELAR PlanSkan, the Central Scientific Library of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences is beginning to digitize large amounts of documents and create the electronic library "Scientific Heritage of the Far East."
At the beginning of 2020, the single CNB fund is more than 780 thousand documents, of which about 290 thousand are in foreign languages.
The foundation of rare and especially valuable publications of the library includes book collections with outstanding aesthetic or documenting properties, which have special scientific and historical and cultural value. At the beginning of 2020 - this is 3 thousand documents of the XV - XX centuries.
Planetary scanners ELAR were delivered to the library for the implementation of the project to create an electronic library of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences - "Scientific Heritage of the Far East." The work will be carried out as part of the program for the development of the Central Research Center of the Far Eastern Economic District of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2020-2024, one of the main areas of which is the creation of digital copies of the most valuable publications with subsequent provision of access to them to users, as well as the organization of promotion of the rare part of the Central Research Center fund as a base for scientific research.
At the initial stage, it is planned to digitize rare editions of historical and local history topics in a short time (often asked editions, periodicals and statistical collections published in the Far East in the 19th and early 20th centuries). Then it is planned to begin digitizing and retrospective entry into the repository of special collections funds. This work is important in connection with the development of cooperation with the National Electronic Library and the need to create high-quality digital copies, says VRIO Director of the Central Scientific Library of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Marina Aleksandrovna Polonik

Library employees note that with the advent of ELAR scanners, it also became possible to start work on two more projects: "Incripts of Far Eastern scientists in the stock collections of the Central Research Center of the Far East Academy of Sciences" and "Virtual Museum of Far Eastern Science," which provide for the digitization, including the personal archives of scientists of the Far East.

The CNB FEB RAS believes that it is extremely necessary to have high-quality copies of documents that meet the standards and formats of electronic libraries on a global scale that ELAR equipment can provide. In addition, the preservation of documentary scientific heritage in the form of digitized backups contributes to the established international scientific exchange between the CNB and libraries (archives) of China, South Korea, Vietnam, the USA, Germany and other partners.
The NSC is just beginning to digitize a large array of documents. Materials vary in content, format and physical condition. ELAR scanners with their flexible parameter setting system are what is needed to work with stock collections with a heterogeneous composition of documents, says Marina Aleksandrovna Polonik
