2021: Samsung Smart Watch ECG and Pressure Measurement Features Available in Russia

Features ECG and measurements pressure on smartwatch Samsung Health Monitor became available in, the Russia company Samsung Electronics announced at the end of April 2021.

With the help of the service, Russian users of the Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 wearables can now measure their blood pressure and take an electrocardiogram. The company recalled that high blood pressure is often associated with diseases of the brain, kidneys and heart, and, if left untreated, can lead to stroke and coronary heart disease.

Samsung Health Monitor Smart Watch ECG and Pressure Measurement Features Now Available in Russia

To use the function, you must first calibrate the Galaxy Watch 3 or Galaxy Watch Active 2 using a traditional tonometer, and then press the pressure measurement button. The device determines the pressure based on pulse wave data that is read by the pulse sensors. The program then analyzes the relationship between the calibration value and the change in blood pressure to determine the exact value.

The app will measure heart rate and rhythm, which will be classified as sinus rhythm (normal, regular heartbeat) or atrial fibrillation (heart beats irregularly).

In addition to the ECG function and the ability to measure blood pressure, the Galaxy Watch 3 also supports the Blood Oxygen (SpO2) function to measure blood saturation with oxygen and has a drop sensor that allows you to send an SOS notification to specified contacts in an emergency.

In Russia, the price of the Galaxy Watch 3 device by the end of April 2021 is 25.5 thousand rubles, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 can be purchased for 16,190 rubles. For comparison: Apple Watch Series 6 cost almost 37 thousand rubles. The ECG function became available to Russian users on the Apple Watch in November 2020.[1]

2020: Implementation of ECG removal function

On May 24, 2020, Samsung announced that the electrocardiogram removal function in its Samsung Health Monitor application was certified by the Korean Product and Drug Quality Control Authority, making development available to users. The ECG withdrawal feature, designed for Galaxy Watch Active 2 smart watches, allows users to track heart rate irregularities indicating atrial fibrillation.

The ECG sensor on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is used to remove the ECG. In order to use the function, the user will need to sit down and put his hand with the clock on the horizontal surface, and press the finger of the other hand and hold the top button on the clock for 30 seconds. The device will measure the heart rate and determine the rhythm, which then classifies as a sinus rhythm (normal, regular heartbeat) or AFib (when the heart beats irregularly). The corresponding recording in the memory of the device will then allow you to show the results of the measurement to the attending physician.

Samsung released a smart watch ECG removal app

In addition to the Galaxy Watch Active2, the application will work on other new Samsung smart watch models equipped with an ECG sensor.

According to research, atrial fibrillation is the most popular deviation from a normal heart rhythm, to which 33.5 million people worldwide are exposed. Every year, this deviation is found in 5 million patients. Atrial fibrillation can significantly increase the risk of complications, including blood clots, heart failure, and stroke. Each year, more than 16 million people suffer from strokes, the main causes of which are atrial fibrillation and high blood pressure (hypertension).

In April 2020, the Samsung Health Monitor application was certified as an application capable of measuring blood pressure. Pressure measurement is performed by pulse wave analysis, which is monitored by heart rate monitoring sensors.[2]
