In Kalmykia will digitize unique archives using the ELAR scanner

On June 3, 2020 it became known that in Kalmyk scientific center RAS corporation ELAR delivered and brought planetary scanner Planskan A2VTs-600 which will serve preserving of the important documents which are stored in library of the Center into operation.

The Kalmyk scientific center RAS is a legal successor of the Kalmyk research institute of the language, literature and history (KNIIYaLI) created in 1941. Today Kalmnz RAHN is a large scientific center in studying, reconstruction and preserving of historical and cultural heritage, linguistic and ethnic realities, art values and spiritual traditions of the Mongolian people, one of representatives of which are the Russian Kalmyks. Organization possesses a priority in development of key aspects of language, folklore, classical and modern literary process, political, social and ethnic history of the Kalmyk people.

The Kalmyk scientific center RAS notes that the Planskan ELAR new planetary scanner A2VTs-600 is equipped with the modern scanning system which provides a qualitative color rendition, high detailing and adequate preserving of the geometrical sizes. The scanner is capable to solve a big range of the complex problems of digitization facing library and archive of the Center.

Speed and quality of scanning of the equipment ELAR and also possibility of scanning large-format (not less A3) editions was important for us. Using the new scanner we are going to digitize a number of valuable books and arrays of archive documents. First of all we scan newspapers. Today the archive of the Halmg nn newspaper more than from 1,700 numbers for 1957-1963 is digitized. Gradually we will create electronic copies of all of the periodicals of Kalmykia which are stored at us to provide to researchers free access to the materials reflecting history and everyday life of the republic and at the same time to save originals, – the manager of scientific library and archive of P.E.
